Connecting a Black Box in standalone mode to an AppSight Server

You can connect a Black Box working in standalone mode to an AppSight Server using the Connect dialog box.

Note that in order to connect to an AppSight Server, you must have connectivity to it over the network. Alternatively, you can connect locally to the Server running on your computer, if you have a full BMC AppSight installation.

Once connected to an AppSight Server, a Black Box will show up as a child node in the tree view under the relevant AppSight Server. Note that the same Black Box can appear under two different AppSight Servers but cannot be connected and recording simultaneously under two different AppSight Servers.

To connect a Black Box to a Server:

  1. Right-click the active Black Box icon in the Status area of your computer and select Connect to Server from the shortcut menu. The Connect to Server dialog box is displayed.
  2. To connect to the required AppSight Server:
In the Server name combo box, type the name of the required AppSight Server.
    Or
Click the Browse button, and navigate to the required AppSight Server. Select the required AppSight Server, and click OK.
The Black Box should connect automatically (the connection mode (DCOM or HTTP/HTTPS) is defined in the installation process.
  3. To connect to the selected AppSight Server, click Connect.

Disconnecting Black Boxes from an AppSight Server

Only a regular Black Box can disconnect from an AppSight Server, via the GUI. It is not possible to disconnect a running Black Box Service.

There are two ways to disconnect a Black Box:

  • Via the registry
  • Via the AppSight System Console when starting a Black Box

Use these options when you no longer need to monitor applications recorded by the specific Black Box. See also Exiting the Black Box.
