Installing the BMC AppSight for Windows Black Box

This section describes how to install the regular BMC AppSight for Windows Black Box. This is typically relevant when you want to record applications using a Black Box with a UI.

Preparing the Black Box for recording requires its installation on the remote computer. A typical AppSight System installation installs both AppSight Server and AppSight Black Box (which can be switched to standalone mode). However, a Black Box in standalone mode can also be installed independently.

To install a Black Box:

  1. Navigate to the directory where the install is located and double-click Windows Black Box.exe. The Installation Welcome screen is displayed.
  2. Click Next. The License Agreement screen is displayed.
  3. Click Yes to accept the License Agreement. The Customer Information screen is displayed.
  4. Enter your User Name and Company Name.
  5. Click Next. The Choose Destination Location screen is displayed.
  6. Click Next to install AppSight for Windows to the default directory, or click Browse to install to a different directory. The directory will be created if it does not already exist.
The Communication Settings screen is displayed.

  7. Select DCOM and/or HTTP as your communication method. Note that when selecting HTTP you can also select HTTP Client (which enables you to connect to another AppSight Server with the Black Box as an HTTP client) OR HTTP Server (which is only enabled if you are installing on Windows 2003 or 2008).

    Note

You can define both DCOM and HTTP as communication methods, but you cannot select both HTTP Client and HTTP Server.

  8. Click Next. The Default Communication Type screen is displayed.
Define the default communication type by selecting the relevant option from the dropdown list. The options available depend on the methods selected in Step 7.
To work with the Black Box in standalone mode (without access to an AppSight Server), leave the Server field empty, and click Next. In the confirmation message asking if you want to leave the Server name empty, click Yes.
If you want the Black Box to connect to an AppSight Server, enter the Server name or IP address.
  9. When selecting the HTTP Server option and not selecting DCOM, an IIS feature (called AppSightProxy) is created. If you have more than one IIS component already installed (such as a website), the Select Website screen is displayed. As IIS features of the product are installed in IIS, you will need to select the website under which AppSightProxy will be installed.
In the displayed list, select the relevant website and click Next.
  10. If your IIS version is below 6, you will be prompted to stop the "World Wide Web Publishing" service. Note that the service is restarted upon completion of the installation.
  11. The Setup Status window is then displayed. After installing all the Black Box files, the Wizard Complete screen is displayed.
  12. Click Finish to complete the installation.
