Step 5 - Running a Black Box

When you have installed a Black Box on a computer connected to your network, you must run it before configuring it and attaching it to applications and recording them.

To run a Black Box after deploying it from the BMC AppSight System Console:

  1. Select Run from the Black Box menu. The Run Black Box dialog box is displayed.
  2. Type in the name of the computer on which you want to run a Black Box.
     Or
Select a Network Domain from the Domain dropdown list. The left-hand list box displays a list of computers in the selected Domain.

    Note

The Computer Name field will accept the IP address of a computer.

  3. Click Connect. A list of installed Black Boxes is displayed in the right-hand list. If more than one Black Box is listed, select the required Black Box.
  4. Click Run. The name of the computer running the Black Box is displayed in the BMC AppSight Console Black Box Application pane, and the Black Box's status is displayed as active (red and blue Black Box icon).

    Warning

    Note

If the selected Black Box is already running, a message will appear after a small delay.

You can confirm that the Black Box is active by locating it in the BMC AppSight System Console Black Box pane.

The Black Box you have "run" is now active, however, it may not be recording any applications or processes. If a pre-defined recording profile has been configured to attach to one or more applications when the Black Box is run, the Black Box will automatically start recording (if set accordingly). By default the Black Box will not start recording when a pre-defined recording profile has been configured.

    Warning

    Note

After you have run a Black Box for the first time, you can then run it and record applications and processes as required using the Black Box shortcut menu (right-click the Black Box in the Black Box pane and select Run ). You can also use the Run option from the Black Box menu.
