Setting the Server Properties

Controlling the size of the recording sessions eases post-recording filtration and helps to manage the disk space.

The Black Box saves the recording data into a buffer and sends it to AppSight Server either through a continuous transfer or transfer on event. All Black Box parameters apply for all of its Recording Profiles and all of the recorded applications, and are applied the same to any connected Black Box.

Saving the sessions into ASL files is controlled by session-specific parameters.

To set the Server Properties:

  1. In the Black Box pane, right-click the relevant AppSight Server and select BMCAppSight Server Properties from the popup menu. The AppSight Server <server name> Properties screen opens.

  2. Set the following parameters:
    • Archive Directory - this is where BMC AppSight saves the recording sessions and other temporary data, like a customized RPR that hasn't been saved yet.
    • Maximum number of sessions - the maximum number of sessions per Black Box recording. Note that 0 = no archived sessions.
    • Maximum HTML session file size - the maximum file size per Black Box recording (in Megabytes)
    • Close Current Session and create a new session when reaching a size limit -
      • Select this check box to set the Black Box to store the recordings in multiple sessions, or overlap the same session.
      • Select this check box to set the Black Box to resume recording upon a crash of the recorded application.
The number of sessions is limited by the "Maximum number of sessions" parameter, above.
  3. Click Black Box access permissions (this determines users' accessibility to the Black Box). The Black Box List screen opens. See Configuring Black Box Access Permissions.
  4. Click Black Box HTTP Connections to define how to connect the AppSight Server to Black Boxes via HTTP. The IIS URL List screen is displayed.
    1. Add Black Boxes to the list. The URL should look like: http://<Black Box Name>/BMC AppSightProxy/WLproxy.dll
    2. Click OK. The status of the Black Box is displayed next to its URL.
  5. Click Black Box startup to select which Black Boxes to start upon starting the computer.
  6. Click BMC AppSight Server Permissions to determines users' accessibility to AppSight Server. In the displayed AppSight Permissions window, select the relevant permissions.
  7. In the Auditing area, define how BMC AppSight tracks operations made by BMC AppSight Server during the recordings. See Setting Audit Trail Parameters.
