Deployment overview

BMC Software provisions the deployment artifacts, such as the deployment manager and the container images. You must download the deployment manager and the token to access container images from the BMC Electronic Product Distribution (EPD) site. The container images are hosted on BMC Docker Trusted Registry (DTR), available at containers.bmc.com. You can only access the containers for which you are licensed. Use the token in the container-token.bmc file that you downloaded from EPD to access the container images.

As a system administrator, use the deployment artifacts to deploy BMC Helix IT Operations Management (BMC Helix ITOM) in your on-premises environment.

The following image shows the components that are installed when you install BMC Helix ITOM:

Benefits of container deployment

  • Reduces the cost of deployment and management
  • Consumes fewer resources and containers are lightweight
  • Enables the use of Helix services on-premises when you cannot use a public cloud
  • Improves security by isolating applications from the host and other applications
  • Scales easily to meet the changing demands of your business
  • Provides better efficiency than virtual machines with fast start up and better performance

BMC has developed a Health Check Tool that you can use to ease the deployment process. For more information, see https://community.bmc.com/s/news/aA33n000000PCtOCAW/bmc-helix-onprem-installation-health-check-tool.

Product roles and permissions

BMC Helix ITOM deployment aims at simplifying the on-premises deployment process performed by the roles described in the following image:

Deployment overview

Before you start the deployment, make sure that your system meets the hardware and software requirements.

The diagram represents the division of BMC Helix IT Operations Management deployment process for an on-premises system into distinct phases.

Day 0 activities refer to the initial tasks and preparations that must be completed before deploying theBMC Helix IT Operations Management.

The different steps that have to be carried out in the planning phase are:

  1. Review the deployment architecture.
  1. Plan the sizing of the container environment.
  2. Plan and set up your Kubernetes cluster.
    1. Get information about the Orchestration platforms.
    2. Understand the Sizing and scalability considerations.
  3. Review the supported balancer and Ingress Controller.
  4. Review the Harbor repository requirements.
  5. Review the controller machine requirements.
  6. Review the requirements for the BMC Helix ITOM products.

Day 1 activities refer to the activities that must be carried out to perform the deployment of BMC Helix IT Operations Management

The different steps that must be carried out during the deployment phase are:

  1. Preparing for Deployment.
    1. Set up BMC Discovery.
    2. Get permission to create ServiceAccount, Role, and RoleBinding.
    3. Download the deployment manager.
    4. Check the Configuration File settings.
    5. Access the container images.
    6. Deploy and configure the Ingress controller.
    7. Create a namespace for deploying BMC Helix IT Operations Management.
    8. Enable BMC Helix Logging.
  2. Deployment
Deploy BMC Helix IT Operations Management.
  3. Post-deployment
         Perform the post-deployment procedures.

Day 2 activities refer to the activities that are performed after the deployment and post-deployment of BMC Helix IT Operations Management are completed.

Perform the administring tasks.

Deployment of BMC Helix IT Operations Management

The BMC Helix ITOM deployment manager installs multiple applications along with the services and the data lake required to run the applications. You must use the following scripts located at helix-on-prem-deployment-manager/configs/ to specify the parameters required for the deployment of BMC Helix ITOM:

  • infra.config - Use this file to specify the infrastructure details.
  • deployment.config - Based on your business requirements and license entitlement, use this file to specify the applications that you want to install.

Important

Installing BMC Discovery is a prerequisite for BMC Helix IT Operations Management . BMC Discovery is a virtual appliance that will be utilized for dynamic service models and to store topology information about data centers that will be monitored.

Upgrade of BMC Helix IT Operations Management

You can upgrade BMC Helix ITOM from version 24.1.00 and 23.4.00 to 24.2.00.  It includes the upgrade of the BMC Helix Platform Common Services and applications.

If you are on BMC Helix ITOM version older than 23.4.00, you must first upgrade to version 23.4.00 or 24.1.00, and then upgrade to 24.2.00.

The following image gives you a high-level overview to upgrade BMC Helix ITOM from version 24.1.00 and 23.4.00 to 24.2.00:
