Technology Knowledge Update TKU 2021-May-2

BMC Discovery Technology Knowledge Update 2021-May-2 is a deliverable for BMC Discovery 11.3, 12.0 and 20.08 (12.1) series.

TKU May-2 release updates

In TKU April 2021 when we added support for Oracle PDBs (DRDC1-14608), LLDP for the Edge Connectivity (DRDC1-16191), and a fix for the 'six' library for GCP Cloud (DRUD1-32253) we have introduced new issues that require immediate fixes.

Consequently we have re-released the TKU 2021 May Release (called "TKU May -2" or "TKU-2021-05-2") to address the following defects:

  • System: Backup/restore feature was broken because product content could not get uninstalled (DRUD1-32735).
  • Software: Oracle default databases were not properly discovered (DRDC1-16855). Part of the update we have done other small changes for the Oracle Database discovery documented here.
  • Network: some specific SNMP devices could not be properly discovered (DRDC1-16893).

For those who have already installed TKU April 2021 or TKU 2021 May -1, we strongly recommend to upgrade to TKU 2021 May -2 please. The TKU April and TKU May -1 released have been removed from EPD.

Besides, as TKU April 2021 was supposed to be the latest release for 11.3 customers, we have re-added the TKU May 2021 -2 for you. TKU May -2 becomes the latest TKU release for 11.3 customers.

Important Note for Discovery 20.02 (12.0) Customers Only

Mapping files for synchronization to ServiceNow CMDB

The mapping files for synchronization to ServiceNow CMDB released with the previous version of BMC Discovery no longer work with the updated synchronization for ServiceNow CMDB. New mapping files are available from EPD. However, to ensure correct operation, you must use the following procedure:

  1. Delete the synchronization for ServiceNow mappings.
  2. Upload the new synchronization for ServiceNow mappings.
  3. Restart the cmdb_sync_transformer service. As the tideway user, enter: tw_service_control --restart cmdb_sync_transformer.

End of Support date for version 11.3

TKU 2021- Apr-1 was the final release with support for Discovery 11.3 version. But because of this re-release we are releasing the TKU May -2 release also to 11.3 customers. Consequently this release becomes the latest versions for 11.3 customers.
For more information, see Supported versions of BMC Discovery.

Discovery for Microsoft Failover Group

TKU May release comes with discovery for Microsoft Failover Group.
For details, see Microsoft-Cluster-Server, Microsoft-SQL-Server.

Discovery for Azure Subscriptions and Management Groups

This release also comes with discovery for Azure Subscriptions and Management Groups hierarchy.
For details, see Microsoft-Azure-Tenants.

Edge connectivity

TKU April was released with important enhancement for Edge connectivity feature by using LLDP information (DRDC1-16191).
For more information, see Edge connectivity.

Important Note for BMC Discovery

If you use BMC Discovery 12.0 (20.02), you must install Patch 2 before you install the August TKU. More information on the patch is available here, Patch 2 for version 20.02.

Important Note for BMC Discovery

If you are discovering MemSQL software product, be aware that in this release we have changed the key of the SoftwareInstance to support specific configurations. If you are using the default port there will be no impact of the data though.

Latest Releases Updates

  • In TKU April release we have fixed issue with the Oracle pattern running subshell commands with sudo. As a solution, the pattern has been updated to prevent running commands with sudo.
In this specific case, the Discovery user needs to be granted rights to execute the "lsnrctl status" commands, as the product itself (Oracle DB) disallows running that kind of commands as root.
    For details, see Oracle-Database.
  • From TKU December we now report security information for hardware where it is published in the US Government National Vulnerability Database.
This is in addition to reporting NVD information for Software Instances, Operating Systems and Network Devices.
  • We have introduced a new synchronization mapping pattern that maps Detail nodes with type "TLS Certificate" to the BMC_Document CIs. This mapping is enabled by default, and could add additional data to the CMDB. For more information, see CDM Mapping for Host.

Release Compatibility

TKU 2021-May-2 is released in the following streams:

  • Release compatible with BMC Discovery 11.3 series.
  • Release compatible with BMC Discovery 12.0 series.
