Contents of the Knowledge Update

The Tideway Knowledge Update comprises four main components:

  • Core - Patterns that model various software products
  • Database detail - Patterns that extend some of the core database patterns to obtain additional detailed information about certain databases
  • Product Lifecycle - Patterns that populate Foundation with information about End-of-Life, End-of-Support, and End-of-Extended-Support for versions of certain host Operating Systems as well as versions of certain software products
  • Hardware Reference Data - Patterns and data import CSV file that populate Foundation with power and heat consumption figures for various hosts.

Installation and Upgrade

Installation and upgrade instructions are provided here.

Note

Due to an issue with pattern module names, if you are upgrading from TKU-2009-Apr-1 to TKU-2009-Jun-1 without removing the TKU April, you will need to manually disable the EMC_Powerpath pattern module in TKU-SUPPORTDETAILS-2009-04-1

A matrix covering ALL commands executed and ALL files retrieved by the patterns is available to our customers from the Tideway Downloads site

HP

Data Protector

If recovered, list of installation servers added as an attribute to the Cell Manager SI

N

Business Objects

BusinessObjects Enterprise

The Central Management Server pattern now supports identification of this component on the UNIX platform as well.

N

Oracle

Database Server

We added a new method to retrieve ora_home, which uses the Path of the TNS Listener associated with a specific SID. This method also allows the Pattern to recognize if it is acting in an E-Business Suite environment, in which case the pattern knows where to look for the listener.ora file, which will be located in a different directory.

N

Sybase

Enterprise Connect Data Access (ECDA)

Patterns in the module enhanced to create either Sybase Direct Connect or Sybase ECDA SIs (depending on product version). Additionally, the generated SIs now create relationships to related Replication Server SIs (if applicable) to demonstrate scenarios where they are part of Sybase Replication Server options.

Y

Sybase

Replication Server

Improved the quality of the model generated by the pattern when grouped key used. Additionally, the pattern now utilizes Foundation dynamic database query functionality to obtain (and record in an SI attribute) the replication settings used by Replication Agent and ECDA SIs to create relationships to the Replication Server SI

Y

Sybase

Replication Agent

ReplicationAgent pattern enhanced significantly. Added Windows support. Added 3 versioning methods. Pattern now also creates relationships with related Replication Server SIs as well as Database SIs (Oracle or Microsoft SQL Server) the replication is done to (when part of Replication Server options and working with Sybase ECDA)

Y

Symantec

Veritas Cluster Server

Implemented an updated mechanism to uniquely identify Veritas CS clusters. Pattern previously assumed that cluster names are unique which is not the case. Now taking this into account as well as managing properly hosts migrating from one cluster to another, or being removed from the cluster and the cluster service no longer running.

Bugs Fixed

The following bugs have been fixed in Tideway Knowledge Update 2009-Jun-1

Pattern Module

N/A

11923

The length of the SI key generated by Sybase jConnect pattern can be quite long as it is using the trigger process command-line or args. This can cause issues when exporting the data from Foundation. Solution: The component of the SI key that is likely to be long is now not used directly but instead an MD5 hash of the string is used instead.

N/A

11936

Oracle PeopleSoft pattern - Algorithm that works out communication connections from config files had a fault in hostname comparison. This has now been fixed.

20907

11952

Versioning (and identification at times) of Symantec VERITAS Storage Foundation for Windows could fail in certain cases where the package name retrieved is different to the package names expected. Added another package name to check for within the pattern.

20907

11953

Symantec VERITAS Enterprise Administrator patterns could fail to identify the product in situations where the process listing only contains the binary name and not the path to the binary. Updated pattern triggers to now trigger on the process without the full path, but in order to prevent cross-matches with other products, the pattern also checks for the installed package, and if it does not find it, does not proceed.

Product Lifecycle Patterns

You can use Tideway Foundation and OS / Software product lifecycle data to:

  • Identify operating systems and software that are exposed to security / stability risks as they are no longer supported by patch updates
  • Identify operating systems and software that you may may be paying a premium maintenance subscription for
  • Identify operating systems and software that are no longer shipping so may increase costs and risks associated with variance

Operating System Product Lifecycle Patterns

TKU 2009-Jun-1 includes product life cycle patterns providing End Of Life, End Of Support and End Of Extended Support dates for:

  • 11 publishers
  • 17 operating systems
  • 177 operating system versions

Go to the OS-Product-Life-Cycle-Patterns-TKU-2009-Jun-1 page for a full list of products included in this release.

Software Product Lifecycle Patterns

This TKU includes product life cycle patterns providing End Of Life, End Of Support and End Of Extended Support dates for an additional XX software product versions.

Hardware Reference Data

You can use Tideway Foundation hardware reference data to:

  • Identify servers that can be expanded in situations where space is a constraining factor in the data center
  • Identify server refresh / rationalization candidates in situations where cooling is a constraining factor in the data center
  • Identify server refresh / rationalization candidates in situations where power is a constraining factor in the data center

This TKU includes hardware reference data providing Rack Size, Power Consumption, Heat Output and Maximum Memory capacity for an additional XX server model configurations.

  • 9 manufacturers
  • 397 server models
  • 1,155 server model configurations
