Dell EMC Isilon SSH and REST API Patterns Coexistence

Context

Originally, the Isilon pattern discovered the Dell EMC Isilon storage systems using SSH. The Distributed Storage Model implemented with the May 2019 TKU required a major upgrade of the pattern and a new discovery method through the OneFS API - REST.

Depending on your environment, you may want to use either method to fully discover Dell EMC Isilon storage systems components:

Important

The Dell EMC Isilon (OneFS API - REST) pattern is only available from BMC Discovery 11.3 or higher.

The following use cases provide comprehensive information about the behavior of BMC Discovery according to your environment:

Outcome

Isilon systems are already discovered using Isilon storage pattern based on SSH

SSH Only

Upgrade to TKU May 2019-05-01

The Isilon systems are discovered using SSH and there are no changes to the existing model.

SSH + REST

Upgrade to TKU May 2019-05-01

Using the Software Instance created previously by SSH, the SSH based Isilon pattern will be triggered. Then, the SSH pattern will call the scan function defined in the new Isilon pattern based on the REST API. The Storage System and Storage System Group nodes will be discovered based on the new Distributed Storage model.

Isilon systems are already discovered with the new Distributed Storage model

Initially SSH and REST credentials were provided. Later the REST credentias are disabled.

Already updated to TKU May 01-05-19

No SSH scan will be performed as the new Distributed Storage model is detected. The REST credentials must be provided to rediscover the system.

Upgrade to TKU May 2019-05-01

As the SSH credentials are no longer available, a new Storage Device based on REST API is discovered and the new Isilon pattern based on full REST is triggered. The discovered model and information will be the same based on the new Distributed Storage Model but still the Host previously discovered using SSH will remain. Also, there will be an identity change due to the previous trigger performed on Software Instance now based on a Storage Device.

Isilon systems are already discovered using SSH access method.

Upgrade to TKU May 2019-05-01

A new Storage Device based on REST API is discovered and the Isilon systems are discovered based on the new Distributed Storage model.

Isilon systems were never discovered before

Only SSH

Upgrade to TKU May 2019-05-01

Host and Software Instance based on SSH are created and the scan will be performed to discover the Storage Systems based on the former Storage model. In order to benefit from the new Distributed Storage model, the REST credentials must be configured. Once the REST credentials are provided, the Isilon systems will be discovered based on the new Distributed Storage model.

SSH credentials are tested before the REST credentials. Therefore, a Host and a Software Instance are created and the SSH pattern will call the scan function defined in the new Isilon pattern based on the REST API. The Storage System and Storage System Group nodes will be discovered based on the new Distributed Storage model.

Upgrade to TKU May 2019-05-01

Host and Software Instance based on SSH are created and no scan will be performed to discover the Storage Systems. No changes and the REST credentials must be provided to rediscover the system.

Important

Upgrading to TKU May, the deactivated version of the Isilon Storage System based on SSH (Isilon_Storage.tpl) must be manually deleted.
