Exporting and importing the credential vault

BMC Discovery provides an option to export your credentials. You can back up the entire credential vault, individual credentials, or the credentials that are now displayed in the UI.

This feature is useful when you are moving a BMC Discovery Outpostfrom one server location to another. During the move, if you uninstall the BMC Discovery Outpost on the original server before installing it in the new location, you will be deregistered from the service and consequently lose the credentials as well. To avoid this, you can use the export option to safely export the credential vault and only then deregister the BMC Discovery Outpost. You can then install the BMC Discovery Outpost in a new location and use the import option to restore the credentials in your vault.

To export the credential vault, you must set a guard passphrase of at least eight characters. Sensitive credential information is encrypted in the exported file by using a key, which is protected by the passphrase. The credentials or entire vault are exported as an encrypted .json file. To successfully import the encrypted credential vault into your system, specify the same passphrase you set during export.

    • Verify Passphrase: Enter the guard passphrase again to verify it.
  5. Click Export
The credential vault is successfully exported as an encrypted .json file to the Downloads folder on your system.

See the following video (07:33), which explains how you can add, edit, test, and manage credentials. You can also explore the functioning of credential vaults and learn how to close, open, export, and import the vault.
