Contained Software Instance node

A ContainedSoftwareInstance (Contained SI) represents an instance of a software entity, one or more processes running in a container. They show where the software is running and can be used to model impacts in your network.

ContainedSoftwareInstance lifecycle

Contained SIs are created and maintained by patterns. The details of how they are maintained depend on the nature of the container, it might be running directly on a host, or under the control of orchestration software. The following section describes the general scenarios in which a Contained SI is created, updated, or removed. 

Creation

When a container running on a host is discovered by using SSH, a ContainedSoftwareInstance is created, and the container and its content are discovered by using SSH and patterns.

Where orchestration software, such as Kubernetes, is also discovered, further discovery can take place by using a separate API scan. This scan can determine which deployments are present, the pods in which they run, and the original images. In this case, SSH and API scans are required for complete discovery.

Contained SIs are stored in the default partition. All child nodes of a Contained SI are also stored in the Contained partition and copied to the default partition under the Stable SI (Software Instance node).

Update

Contained SI nodes are updated when their container is updated.

Removal

Contained SIs and their child nodes are removed when their container is removed.
