Analyzing costs by cost pool
Before you begin
Ensure that the required cost pools are already added and their cost and usage information is computed. For more information, see Adding-and-managing-a-cost-pool.
To analyze costs by cost pool
In the navigation pane
of the TrueSight console, select Cloud Cost Control and click the Cost Pools tab.
The Cost Pools page is displayed. It shows the costs and other details for all the cost pools for the selected month. The most expensive cost pool is listed first. By default, the costs for the current month are displayed.
View a quick cost summary of all the cost pools
Review the cost pool details in the Monthly Cost by Cost Pool table. By default, some columns are hidden. You can show or hide columns using the action menu
that is located next to the Monthly Cost by Cost Pool table title.
Column
Description
Name
Name of the cost pool that uses the resources of the cloud provider. To drill down into detailed cost analysis of a cost pool, click the name. The Cost Pool Details page is displayed.
Cost [$]
Actual monthly cost of the resources in the cost pool.
Projected Cost [$]
Projected cost of the resources in the cost pool for the remaining days of the month. This value is based on the Cost value. This column is displayed only when the current month filter is selected.
Previous Month Cost [$]
Actual cost for the previous month of the resources in the cost pool.
Projected Cost vs Previous Month [%]
Percentage representing projected monthly cost with respect to the cost in the previous month.
This column is displayed only when the current month filter is selected.
Number of Resources
Number of resources in the cost pool.
Potential Savings [$]
Estimated maximum savings that you can achieve by applying resource usage cost optimization to this cost pool. Click the value to further analyze the cost optimization details. The Resource Usage page in the Cost Optimization tab opens that displays details only for the selected cost pool.
Providers
Cloud providers that host the resources in the cost pool. A cost pool might have resources provisioned on more than one cloud provider.
- To view the cost for a specific provider only or for a specific month, use the global filters:
Global filters:1. Cloud Provider quick filter: Click a cloud provider button to show or hide the provider's data on the page.2. Monthly filter: Click the monthly filter to select a specific month for which you want to view the data.Info: By default, the page displays data for the current month and for all available cloud providers. The options that you select in the global filters (Cloud Provider quick filter, Monthly filter) apply to all the page elements (table and charts).
- To save an offline copy of the cost pools page, click
and select Export to PDF or Export to Excel, based on your requirements.
Drill down into a cost pool for details
In the Cost Pools page, click the cost pool name which you want to investigate and view details for.
The Cost Pool Details page opens that provides cost and other details for the selected cost pool such as the average monthly or projected monthly cost, projected yearly cost, projected cost versus previous month, number of resources, providers, and potential savings. You can click the Potential Savings value to further analyze the cost optimization details. The Resource Usage page in the Cost Optimization tab opens that displays details only for the selected cost pool.
The Cost Pool Details page also displays the following charts:Chart
Description
Daily Costs
A stacked area graph that enables you to compare the daily usage costs of the cloud providers for the cost pool.
Monthly Cost by Category
A pie chart that enables you to get a quick comparative view of the cost of the different cloud services, grouped by service categories, that the cost pool uses.
Monthly Costs
A chart that displays the cost breakup for the selected cost pool for the past and future months, based on the selected month.
The cost details are based on the selected month. If you change the month and year, the cost data changes accordingly.
- To know details of the resources that are assigned to the selected cost pool or to identify the resources with higher costs, click the Resources tab.
Review the following column values in the Resources page:

Resource
Name of the resource in the cost pool. To drill down into detailed cost analysis of a resource, click the name. The Bill details page with details for the selected resource is displayed.
Total Cost [$]
Total monthly cost of the resource in the cost pool.
Provider
Cloud provider in which the resource is provisioned.
Cloud Service
Cloud service that uses the associated resource.
Instance Type
A specification that defines the resources (CPU, memory, and storage) for an instance. For example. m1.small, m1.large.
Region
Region where the resource is located. Region value is not populated for a business service that uses the on-premises infrastructure systems.
Account Name
Name of the account that is associated with the account identifier.
Account Identifier
A unique identifier assigned to the account that owns the resource. This identifier is assigned by the cloud provider.
In case of AWS and Google Cloud Platform, it is the 12-digit account ID. For Azure, it is the subscription ID.
- To investigate further into a resource, click the resource name.
The Resource details page opens that shows cost and other details for the selected resource such as the average monthly cost, provider, and region. The tags associated with the resource are also displayed.The page also displays a chart. For the resource type Tax, the Monthly Cost by Operation chart is displayed, which is a pie chart that describes the monthly cost of the resource for the different operations for which the resource is used. For all other resource types, the Daily Costs chart is displayed, which is a stacked area graph that enables you to compare the daily usage costs based on operations performed on the resource. To view and analyze the bill line-item details for the resource, click the Bill Details tab. The Bill Details page is displayed that provides a line-by-line detailed bill of the costs associated with the selected resource:- Name of the selected resource
- Cost of the resource for a specific operation as indicated by the associated date stamp
- Date when the resource is used for the associated operation
- Type of the resource
- Activity or operation for which the selected resource is used
- Region where the selected resource is located
- Specific cost description of how much of the total cost is used by the resource
- Click the ← Back button on the browser to go back to the Cost Pool Details page.
To view and analyze the bill line-item details for the resources that are assigned to the selected cost pool, click the Bill Details tab.
The Bill Details page is displayed that provides a line-by-line detailed bill of the costs associated with the selected resource. The page displays following details for the selected resource:

Name of the selected resource.
Cost [$]
Cost of the resource for the specific operation in this record of the bill line item.
Date
Date when the resource is used for the associated operation.
Provider
Cloud provider that the resource is associated with.
Category
Cloud service category of the cloud service.
Cloud Service
Cloud service for which the associated resource is used.
Instance Type
A specification that defines the resources (CPU, memory, and storage) for an instance. For example. m1.small, m1.large.

Usage Type
The type of usage that is covered by this line item. If you paid for a Reserved Instance, the report has one line that shows the monthly committed cost, and multiple lines that show a charge of 0.
Usage
Usage of the resource for the specific operation. This value along with the Unit value provide you the right indicator of the resource usage.
Unit
Indicates the unit for which the resource is used for the specific operation. For example, GB, MB.
Operation
Activity or operation for which the selected resource is used.
Region
Region where the selected resource is located.
Account Name
Name of the account associated with the account identifier.
Account Identifier
A unique identifier assigned to the account that owns the resource. This identifier is assigned by the cloud provider.
In case of AWS and Google Cloud Platform, it is the 12-digit account ID. For Azure, it is the subscription ID.
Description
Specific cost description of how much of the total cost is used by an instance type.
Use the Resource filter to view the bill details for a specific resource.
To analyze cost against budget for the selected cost pool, click the Budget tab. The Budget tab provides the following details for the selected period.
Column
Description
Budget Amount
Budget amount allocated to the cost pool for this budget cycle. You can allocate the budget to the cost pool by using the Set Budget option.
Cost
Amount of the allocated budget this cost pool has consumed till the current date in the budget cycle.
Cost vs Budget %
Percentage of the allocated budget this cost pool has consumed till the current date in the budget cycle.
Balance
Balance amount of this cost pool for the budget cycle, with respect to the allocated budget. The amount is displayed in Red font and in brackets when the balance is negative.
Projected Cost
Projected total cost of the cost pool for the budget cycle. Calculated based on the spent budget as on the current date in the budget cycle.
Projected Cost vs Budget %
Percentage of the projected total cost of the cost pool for the budget cycle. Calculated based on the spent budget as on the current date in the budget cycle.
Projected Classification
Projected classification to display whether the cost pool is In budget, Overspender, or Underspender based on the threshold that you set in the Settings page.
Projected Balance
Projected balance amount that this cost pool will have at the end of the budget cycle, with respect to the projected cost and the allocated budget. The amount is displayed in Red font and in brackets when the balance is negative.
Days to exhaust the budget
Displays one of the following options based on the actual and projected budget values:
- Not exhausting: When the cost pool will not consume the allocated budget at the end of the budget cycle.
- Exhausted: When the cost pool has already consumed the allocated budget. A severity icon is also displayed.
- <Number of days>: The number of days in which the cost pool will consume the remaining budget.
To compare the budget details for all periods in the current fiscal year, review the Summary of fiscal year <year> table.
- To simulate the migration of a cost pool, click Simulate Cloud Migration. For more information, see Estimating-the-cost-of-migrating-servers-to-the-public-cloud.
- To save an offline copy of the details on the currently active tab, click
and select Export to PDF or Export to Excel.
For example, if you want an offline copy of the Bill Details tab, first select that tab and then select the required Export option.
