Analyzing normalized compute hours by cloud provider

The Normalized Compute Hours subpage provides a quick view of the total used and projected normalized compute hours (compute time) of your multi-cloud infrastructure for a selected month and year. 

The normalized compute hours details are displayed as color-coded charts. By default, the charts display data for the current month and for all available cloud providers. You can use the charts to understand the data on a month-by-month basis to evaluate the total hours spent and the projected hours for every provider. 

From the Normalized Compute Hours subpage, you can achieve the following goals:  

• View and compare the monthly and yearly compute time (normalized compute hours) by cloud provider
• View and compare the month-by-month normalized compute hours for cloud providers over the past year
• View and compare the projected the month-by-month normalized compute hours for cloud providers over the next year
• Identify the cloud provider with the highest normalized compute hours
• Evaluate the used compute time and estimate the future compute time

By comparing the values that you see in the Costs page and in the Normalized Compute Hours page over months, you can evaluate the impact of compute time on the cost. In a best case scenario, if the cost of a provider increases in a subsequent month, then the corresponding normalized compute hours value must also increase. 

To view and analyze normalized compute hours by cloud provider

1. In the navigation pane of the TrueSight console, select Cloud Cost Control.
   The Summary page is displayed.
2. In the Summary page, click the Normalized Compute Hours tab.
   
   
   

3. For a quick summary of the normalized compute hours data per provider, review the charts on the page.

   Click a tab to view details for the chart.

   • Monthly Compute Hours by Provider pie chart
   • Projected Yearly Compute Hours by Provider pie chart
   • Monthly Normalized Compute Hours bar chart

   
   

   Monthly Compute Hours by Provider pie chart: Enables you to compare the total monthly normalized compute hours of the providers.

   Key characteristics of the chart are as follows:

   • The center of the chart displays the total monthly compute hours of all providers along with the trend.
   • Each slice of the pie chart has a unique color and is associated with a specific cloud provider.
   • The projected or forecasted number is displayed in a separate slice in a lighter shade of the provider's color.
   • On hovering your mouse over a slice of the chart, you can view details of the specific provider such as number of hours of the total hours. 
   • On clicking a provider name in the legend, you can choose to remove the details for that provider.

   The following screenshot shows the compute hours data for the current month. Hence, the compute hours value is aggregated based on actual data and projected data.

   

   
   

   Projected Yearly Compute Hours by Provider pie chart: Enables you to compare the total forecasted or projected compute hours for the current year for each cloud provider.

   The forecasted values are displayed only when the year that you are currently viewing is not over yet or when the year is in the future. If the currently selected month is from an earlier year, this chart displays measured costs and not projected or forecasted costs.

   Key characteristics of the chart are as follows: 

   • The center of the chart displays the total yearly compute hours of all providers along with the cost trend. 
   • Each slice of the pie chart has a unique color and is associated with a specific cloud provider.

   • The projected or forecasted number is displayed in a separate slice in a lighter shade of the provider's color.
   • On hovering your mouse over a slice of the chart, you can view details of the specific provider such as cost (in percentage and currency) of the total cost. 
   • On clicking a provider name in the legend, you can choose to remove the details for that provider.

   The following screenshot shows sample data for year 2017 for the cloud service providers: AWS and On-premises.

   

   
   

   Monthly Normalized Compute Hours chart: Enables you to compare the monthly cost per provider and analyze the compute hours trend over the 12 months of historical data, currently selected month, and 6 months of forecasted data. 

   The bar for the current month displays both historical and forecasted data, depending on the current date of the month. For each bar that shows the forecasted costs, there are two lines (upper and lower bounds) on either side of the top of your bar. These lines indicate the probability that your bill or cost will fall in the range between these bounds. 

   Key characteristics of the chart are as follows:

   • The chart displays a bar for each month. Every bar is divided into color-coded sections for each cloud provider.

   • The projected or forecasted costs are displayed in a lighter shade of the provider's color.
   • The months displayed in the chart depend on your currently selected month in the global Monthly filter.

   • On hovering your mouse over a section of a bar, you can view the details for the selected provider.

   • On clicking a provider name in the legend, you can choose to remove the cost details for that provider.

   Info: Monthly bars with historical data are displayed only if the data is available in the system.

   

4. To view the normalized compute hours data for a specific provider only or for a specific month, use the global filters or chart-specific filters:

   The [expand] macro is a standalone macro and it cannot be used inline. Click on this message for details.
   This macro generates standalone content. As a consequence you need to make sure to use a syntax that separates your macro from the content before and after it so that it's on a line by itself. For example in XWiki Syntax 2.0+ this means having 2 newline characters (a.k.a line breaks) separating your macro from the content before and after it.
