Tracking license usage of your environment

Use the License Tracking utility to generate license usage reports in HTML, XML, and CSV formats. These reports provide insights into the number of managed services, the average number of server endpoints, the active ETL usage, and the installed additional packages. You can then compare these numbers with the numbers that you are entitled to use based on your license.

The licensing model is based on the highest monthly average usage. Therefore, the main license report (yearly) shows the month with the highest average, which is then used to determine your total annual license consumption. All system entities with metrics updated in the last two days (recent activity) are included in the license report. Unassigned and Dismissed entities are also counted, but only if their metrics have been populated in the last two days. To exclude the Unassigned and Dismissed entities from the reports, you need to purge these entities. For details on how to purge, see Configuring-the-global-settings

To generate a license report

  1. In Administration > SYSTEM > Maintenance, select the Maintenance Activities tab.
  2. In the row for the License Tracking utility, click run.png.
The Overview page of Run: License Tracking is displayed.
  3. Click Next.
The Hosts selection page of Run: License Tracking is displayed.
  4. Select the required hosts and click Proceed.
The License Tracking utility runs and generates the license report. The Maintenance page refreshes, and the License Tracking record in the table displays an updated execution date and status.
  5. To access the report:
    1. Make sure that the status of the License Tracking record shows ENDED.
    2. Click 1752471394841-973.png to view the deployment log. In the Deployment logs for the License Tracking utility, click1752471423314-190.png to download a ZIP file that contains the license.xml and license.html summary files, and other detailed report files.

License reports for server, serverless, network, and storage entities

When you run the License Tracking utility, the following reports are generated based on data from the past year for server, serverless, network, and storage entities:

  • The _daily report includes the count of entities whose metrics have been populated in the last two days.
  • The _monthly report includes the average entity count for each month
  • The _details report provides a snapshot of entities that are actively running (metrics populated in the last two days) at the time the report is generated.
  • The main license report (yearly) displays the count for a month with the highest average, which is used to calculate yearly consumption.

Restrictions in the license summary

The license summary includes the following restrictions:

  • The license summary includes only distributed entities (not mainframe-related) based on the managed systems, even when the “BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization for Mainframe” add-on is installed.
  • It does not count storage utilization-related entities.
  • The license summary excludes data for custom ETLs and is limited to a maximum of 400 days of ETL data. The license summary displays ETL data only for the out-of-the-box (OOTB), Moviri, and Sentry Software ETLs.

  •  The license summary does not differentiate between Views and ETL packages and lists all the packages together.
