Visualizing the predictive time series data of BMC Helix Continuous Optimization
Use the BMC Time Series Forecast visualization plug-in to view the predictive data of BMC Helix Continuous Optimization on a dashboard. The dashboard includes a line chart that shows the prediction data based on a selected algorithm for a particular metric (forecast metric) from data sources, such as BMC Helix Continuous Optimization and confidence bands. Select a period of prediction and show the thresholds to visualize and analyze how the forecast metric behaves relative to the threshold. The threshold can be a fixed value or based on another metric series.
You can also customize the Axis settings. For details on how to configure this plug-in, see Visualizing predictive time series data in panels.
To display thresholds based on metrics
Display the threshold based on the metric series on the dashboard so that you can visualize and analyze how the forecast metric behaves relative to threshold metrics. For example, compare and analyze the data for TOTAL_STORAGE_USED (forecast metric) with TOTAL_STORAGE_PROVISIONED (threshold metric).
To do this, retrieve and visualize data for forecast and threshold metrics by adding the required queries in the metric query type. By default, the metric added in the first query is displayed as the forecast metric, and metrics added in the subsequent queries are displayed as threshold metrics. You can visualize the threshold based on a single metric by using the Threshold based on metric option in the plug-in.
Perform the following tasks to display the threshold based on a metric:
- From the navigation menu
, click Dashboards.
- Click Add visualization.
- In the Query section, select the data source (For example, BMC Helix).
- Retrieve the forecast and threshold metrics.
- Add a query for the forecast metric.
- Select the query type as Metric and the source (For example, Optimize).
- Type a metric query or expand the metric browser to build the query.
- Add a legend to appear in the panel.
- Save the query.
For details, see Metric Query.
Repeat Step a to add queries for threshold metrics and their percentages.
Review the following example queries that can be added to show the forecast metric and multiple threshold metrics:
Metric
Query
Forecast metric
MEM_CONSUMED{entid="51400"}Threshold metric 1
TOTAL_REAL_MEM{entid="51400", inputstat="max"}Percentage for threshold metric 1
TOTAL_REAL_MEM{entid="51400", inputstat="max"} * 0.8Threshold metric 2
MEM_GRANTED{entid="51400", inputstat="max"}Percentage for threshold metric 2
MEM_GRANTED{entid="51400", inputstat="max"} * 0.7
- Add a query for the forecast metric.
- View the predictive data.
- On the Panel tab, expand Visualizations and select the BMC Time Series Forecast plug-in.
- Expand the BMC Time Series Forecast tab and Select the algorithm type and future period.
- Select the forecast metric from the list of metrics that you retrieved in Step 4.
The preview displays the forecast metric and remaining metrics added in the subsequent queries as threshold metrics. - (Optional) To display the threshold based on a single metric, select the Threshold based on metric option.
- Select the metric that is considered a threshold to compare with the forecast metric.
- (Optional) Specify the threshold percentage.
- Save the panel.
To display fixed value thresholds
Configure the fixed value threshold to visualize and analyze how the metric behaves relative to a specified threshold value. To do this, expand the Thresholds tab in the plug-in and configure the required values. For details, see Visualizing predictive time series data in panels.
