Tracking license usage of your environment

Use the License Tracking utility to generate license usage reports in XML and HTML formats. These reports provide the count or number of managed services and the average number of server endpoints that are currently in use in your environment. You can then compare these numbers with the numbers that you are entitled to use based on your license.

All system entities whose metrics have been populated in the last two days (last activity) are counted in the license report. Unassigned and Dismissed entities are also counted, but only if their metrics have been populated in the last two days. To exclude the Unassigned and Dismissed entities from the reports, you need to purge these entities. For details on how to purge, see Configuring-the-global-settings

When you run the utility, the reports are generated based on data from the past year and include the following:

  • The _daily report includes the count of systems whose metrics have been populated in the last two days.
  • The _monthly report includes the average entity count for each month
  • The _details report provides a snapshot of entities that are actively running (metrics populated in the last two days) at the time the report is generated.
  • The main license report (yearly) displays the count for a month with the highest average, which is used to calculate yearly consumption.

Restrictions in the license summary

The following restrictions are applicable in the license summary:

  • The license summary counts only distributed (not mainframe-related) entities according to the managed systems, even when the “BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization for Mainframe” add-on is installed.
  • The license summary does not count storage utilization-related entities.
