Key considerations for migration
Data that you can migrate
When you run the migration tool, the following data is migrated automatically:
- Analyses and models
- Basic reports, basic report templates, and report results
- Catalog entities
- Custom metric profiles
- Entity filters and time filters
- ETL tasks and custom ETL code
- Events
- Historical data
- Relations
- Tags and tagging rules
- SQL and Summary Data marts
- Custom Optimizer rules
- Statistics (Min, Max, AVG)
- Custom statistics (migrated as Baselines)
- View groups and custom views with the supported templates. For details about the templates that are not supported, see Features that are not supported in BMC Helix Continuous Optimization.
- Derived entities
What's changed for some of the features?
The following table lists the features or tasks that have different UI or behavior after migration.
TrueSight Capacity Optimization 20.02 | BMC Helix Continuous Optimization |
---|---|
Data marts | All the data marts are migrated. To find the status of the data marts, navigate to Administration > Data marts. Filter on the Status column to view the status of the migrated data marts. Summary data marts with Database Server entity type must be changed to use Entity filter created using tags. For the data marts that show the status as Error or Warning, you may need to re-create the SQL data marts by using the Summary data mart wizard in BMC Helix Continuous Optimization. For more information, see Creating-a-summary-data-mart-for-a-custom-view and Managing-entity-filters. If you do not want to migrate the data marts and views, update the value of the migrate-datamarts-and-views parameter to false in the application.properties file. For more information, see Running-the-migration-tool. |
Gateway Server | Although Gateway Server is supported in BMC Helix Continuous Optimization, it will not be migrated. You can configure the Gateway Servers after migration. |
Virtual node | BMC Helix Continuous Optimization does not contain the Virtual Node system type for data imported from an operating system. BMC Helix Continuous Optimization provides separate namespaces for each metric that is imported from hypervisors and operating systems. After migration, metrics from the Virtual Node system type are assigned the opt:meas:vn namespace. For more information, see Namespaces. |
Optimizer rules |
|
Custom optimizer rules > Monitor violation | Renamed as Good/Warn/Poor Samples Count. |
Custom optimizer rules > Data vs. Statistic |
|
Custom optimizer rules > Statistic vs. Threshold |
|
Custom statistics |
|
Custom statistics > Rule-based custom statistics > Type as Percentile | Custom statistics of Percentile type will be available in the Aggregation list in Baselines as a fixed set of percentile values. Percentile that are not available in the Aggregation list, for example, 85th percentile (any user-defined percentile) will be mapped to the nearest fixed percentile value, that is 95th percentile for 85th percentile after the migration. |
Custom statistics >Rule-based custom statistics > Aggregation |
|
Custom statistics > Rule-based custom statistics > Aggregation groups |
|
Custom statistics > Rule-based custom statistics > Input resolution | Not available. The baseline uses the resolution as selected in the analysis editor or in condition type as Data vs. Baseline of the custom optimizer rule. |
Custom statistics > Rule-based custom statistics > Output | Not available |
Custom statistics > Rule-based custom statistics > Input statistic | Not available |
Administration > ETL & System tasks | If there are Database Server entity types extracted by Oracle - Enterprise Management ETL before migration, Oracle - Enterprise Management ETL must be executed soon after migration and manually reconcile the resulting entities of Generic entity type with their Virtual Machine counterparts extracted by vCenter ETLs or VIS file parser ETLs. |
Features that are not supported in BMC Helix Continuous Optimization
BMC Helix Continuous Optimization includes changes to the level of support for the following features that are currently supported in TrueSight Capacity Optimization:
Features planned for future releases
Some features will be available in future releases of BMC Helix Continuous Optimization:
- Reservations
- Investigate
- Capacity views - Hyper-V, Datacenter Overview, Network, OpenStack, XenServer
- Sunburst custom view templates
For more information about these features, see TrueSight Capacity Optimization 20.02.
Discontinued features
Support for some features, such as Integration Studio, Virtual Planner, and Chargeback is discontinued in BMC Helix Continuous Optimization. For a complete list of the discontinued features, see Deprecated-and-discontinued-features.
If you are using self-ETLs in TrueSight Capacity Optimization, you can use formula or custom ETLs to compute those custom metrics.
Functions managed by BMC
The following administration functions related to components in your on-premises environment are not available in BMC Helix Continuous Optimization because they are now managed by BMC.
- Global configuration tasks that include SNMP notifications, search options, and manual editing of system properties
- Maintenance tasks that include configuring logs and software updates
- Modification of the data warehouse aging properties
- Primary scheduler restart
