UNIX network metrics
The following network-related metrics and metric groups are available for UNIX and Linux systems.
Network Statistics
The Network Statistics metric group contains metrics that reflect the level of network activity and performance. It is a static table group with a record of each network protocol and device on a given system. The metrics are described in the table below.
Network Configuration
The Network Configuration metric group contains one record per network interface card that is installed in your system.
Network Interface Statistics
The Network Interface Statistics metric group contains metrics that reflect the level of network activity and performance. It is a static table group. It has a record of each network interface device on a given system.
Network Protocol Statistics
The Network Protocol Statistics metric group contains network protocol statistics data previously reported as part of the Network Statistics metrics group. This group contains a record for each of the protocols IP, ICMP, TCP and UDP. This group provides a summary view on the protocol-specific groups IP Statistics, ICMP Statistics, TCP Statistics, and UDP Statistics. The data in each record of this group is a function of data in the corresponding protocol-specific group.
The Network Protocol Statistics metric group supersedes the Network Statistics metric group.
The metrics in the Network Protocol Statistics table are calculated using formulae based on the metrics in the protocol-specific groups, as shown in the following table:
Formulae for calculating Network Protocol Statistics metrics
IP Statistics
The IP Statistics metric group in the following table includes those counters that describe the rates that Internet Protocol (IP) datagrams are received and sent by a certain computer using the IP protocol. It also describes various error counts for the IP. IP is the protocol used to route information on the Internet and other TCP/IP based networks.
ICMP Statistics
The ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol) Statistics metric group in the following table includes those counters that describe the rates at which ICMP Messages are received and sent by an entity using the ICMP protocol. It also describes various error counts for the ICMP protocol.
TCP Statistics
The TCP Statistics metric group in the following table those counters that describe the rates at which Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) segments are received and sent by a certain entity using the TCP protocol. TCP is a component of TCP/IP. It provides reliable data delivery services over connection oriented links. In addition, this metric group describes the number of TCP connections that are in each of the possible TCP connection states.
UDP Statistics
The UDP Statistics metric group in the following table includes those counters that describe the rates that User Datagram Protocol (UDP) datagrams are received and sent by a certain entity using the UDP protocol. It also describes various error counts for the UDP protocol. UDP is an alternative to TCP. It is a connectionless transport service, and therefore is not as reliable as TCP, but in some cases may be more efficient.
NFS Statistics
The NFS Statistics metric group is described in the following table.
NFS3 Statistics
The NFS3 Statistics metric group is described in the following table.
NFS4 Statistics
The NFS4 Statistics metric group is described in the following table. Metrics apply to all platforms, except as indicated.
