Setting up and managing domains in your workspace

A domain is a set of systems and business drivers that are logically related to each other. Domains can be used to group together services belonging to the same business division. To access the domains, navigate to Workspace > Domains, Services & Applications.

Some common examples of domains are:

  • Services: Websites, e-commerce sites, billing platforms, ticketing systems
  • Groups of resources of the same type: A set of databases, servers, or application servers

You can create special types of domains that group together systems or business drivers by their type rather than by the service they supply. For example, an Application Servers domain groups application servers together.

BMC Helix Continuous Optimization also provides a multi-purpose domain called Generic.

Note

When you create a domain of a certain type, you must specify the type of systems or business drivers to aggregate in it. For example, you cannot put a database in a domain that groups application servers. The exception is the Generic domain type, which can include any type of system or business driver.

When adding a system or business driver to a domain, select it from a list of entities of other existing applications. The system or business driver that you want to include in your domain does not need to be shared. In this way, you can associate a system or business driver with its service context and other domains.

Example

You have an application server that is part of a specific service – a bank portal. You associate it with a Service Offering domain called Bank Portal that includes both systems and business drivers for that service.

Similarly, if you want to group all the application servers of your company together, create an Application Server domain.
