Resource Pools page in the vSphere Infrastructure view

The Resource Pools page in the vSphere Infrastructure view provides views and reports for resource pools. Resource pools are units of resources that are allocated to business units. Use this page to monitor resource usage by resource pool.

The data displayed in the page provides a complete picture of resource pool memory and CPU usage and contention using specific metrics, and helps answer critical questions related to capacity and memory subsystems, such as:

  • How much CPU is reserved for a particular resource pool?
  • How many VMs in my resource pool are powered ON?
  • How much memory is reserved for a particular resource pool?

To access the page, in the Views navigation pane, click Views > Virtualization > vSphere > Infrastructure, and in the vSphere Infrastructure page, click the Resource Pools tab.

The data in the page is categorized based on different subsystems and grouped under separate tabs. Click a tab to view the metrics for that subsystem. Metrics per resource pool are displayed in a tabular format.

Capacity metrics

Capacity metrics are displayed in the Capacity page. It displays consolidated trend and saturation related metrics for two subsystems: CPU and Memory. Also, displays number of powered on VM information.

Each row in the table represents a resource pool and displays the following metrics:

For more information on VMware metrics, see Metrics-collected-by-VMware-ETLs.

Memory metrics

Memory metrics are displayed in the Memory page. It displays memory related metrics, including ballooning, granted and shared memory.

Each row in the table represents a resource pool and its corresponding vCenter and displays the following metrics:

Detailed information about a specific vSphere resource pool

To view the details page for a particular vSphere resource pool, click its name under the Resource Pool column. The Resource Pool details page displays information under the following sections or panels:

Section or Panel

Description

Summary page

A quick graphical summary of the CPU and memory utilization of the resource pool. Core metrics for the selected entity are displayed as analysis charts, depending on available data. At the bottom of each chart is a link that takes you to the Data Explorer view for the specific resource type, and displays charts and information for a larger set of metrics.

The data displayed in Data Explorer view charts for any resource part of this view category, is based on the time filter that is applied to the primary view in this tab. You can select Advanced time periods (other than default/basic) from the Data Explorer view for the selected resource, to view charts over a different time resolution.

Configuration Details page

Configuration information about the resource pool.

Tags panel

List of tags that are associated with the cluster. You can assign or remove tags by using the Edit Tags option from the Tags action menu.
