AIX - IBM Power Systems

This topic describes how to integrate BMC Helix Continuous Optimization with AIX running in logical partitions on IBM Power Systems using IBM PowerVM virtualization software.

Recommended data collection method

The recommended data collection method for AIX is to is to install Gateway Server, and then use one of the Gateway Server connectors to extract data into BMC Helix Continuous Optimization.

  1. To extract only HMC (IBM Hardware Management Console) data (configuration and allocation data on all the LPARs, plus CPU utilization data on all the LPARs), you need to install an Agent on at least one LPAR of an IBM Power System, with access to the HMC.
  2. To extract full utilization metrics from the LPARs, you need to install a Agent on each LPAR of the IBM Power System frame.

Limitations of HMC-only data collection

There are some limitations with the HMC-only data collection option:

  • You get no visibility into the OS behavior: Caching, paging, memory utilization, and similar metrics are not available.
  • No process-level CPU or memory data is available. This implies that no business workloads can be defined.
  • The HMC cannot see the hostnames (DNS names) of the LPAR. Thus, it is not possible to correlate the LPAR identifiers with the hostnames used for system administration, unless you happen to consistently use the exact same names for both purposes.

Recommended integration method

The recommended and supported integration method is to use the Gateway Server vis file.
