Clusters page in the Hyper-V Overview view
The Clusters page helps you identify the number of additional VMs that can be added to each cluster, the total and available resources in the cluster, and manages the resources of all the hosts it contains. It also enables you to view VMs that are currently powered on and running, their CPU and memory utilization, how many additional VMs can be added to each cluster depending on the spare cluster capacity, among other details.
Data displayed in the Clusters page can be used to answer the following questions:
- Do I have sufficient capacity in my Hyper-V environment to meet the resource demand?
- Are my clusters used effectively?
- Are there any over-allocated or under-allocated clusters?
An example of the Hyper-V Clusters view
To access the Hyper-V Clusters view in the navigation panel of Helix Capacity Optimization Dashboard, select > Capacity Views > Virtualization > Hyper-V > Overview.
The Clusters tab is displayed by default.
Viewing the Hyper-V Cluster Capacity table
The Hyper-V Cluster Capacity table lists all clusters available in the selected Gateway Server domain.
- By default, the metric tables in this view are filtered on all domains. Use the domain filter options to select the required domain from the table.
- By default, the summarization time range for all metrics is set to Last 30 days. Use the time filter options to select an alternate range. The available options are:
- Last 30 days: Displays data for the last 30 days, excluding today.
- Last 7 days: Displays data for the last 7 days, excluding today.
- Yesterday: Displays data for the previous day, excluding today.
- Define Period: Lets you define a custom time range. Use the calendar to select the start and end dates for your custom time period. This option is not available for all views.
- By default, some table columns are hidden. You can show or hide columns using the action menu
that is located next to the table title.
For information on how to sort columns, see Sorting-a-table-in-the-Helix-Capacity-Optimization-Dashboard. For information on how to use filters, see Using-filtering-options-in-the-Helix-Capacity-Optimization-Dashboard.
Each row corresponds to a Hyper-V cluster and shows the following information:

Specifying custom VM templates to calculate Spare VM basis
To specify or edit typical or custom VM template settings to calculate Spare VM basis for an average VM, perform the following task:
- Under the Spare VM basis column in the table, click TYPICAL or CUSTOM.
- Under Specify custom VM template, select any one of the following options:
- Use average VM for cluster <cluster name> based on the past 30 days: Use the default (typical) VM template to calculate Spare VM basis for the selected cluster.
Specify custom VM data for cluster <cluster name>: Enter values for the following attributes to calculate Spare VM basis for the selected cluster.
- Click Save.
- Depending on the values you have entered, your custom VM template might take some time to save.
- An information banner under Specify custom VM template that says Custom VM saved successfully denotes a successful save.
- Click Delete to delete the current custom VM template and return to the table.
Spare VM calculation
Spare VMs are computed using the resource consumption of an average VM in the cluster. Average VM can be a typical VM in the cluster or a custom VM. The following table lists formulas for Spare VM calculation.
Viewing Hyper-V cluster details
To view the details page for a particular Hyper-V cluster, click the cluster name in the Cluster column in any of the view tables.
The details page for each cluster displays the following information:
- General details: General cluster details, such as name, type, description and number of elements within it are displayed at the top of the page.
Related Information panel: Displays links to detailed pages for Thresholds and Host details.
Clicking on the Thresholds link takes you to the Thresholds page, that allows you to view and manage threshold settings for the selected Hyper-V cluster. For more information, see Configuring-and-managing-thresholds-for-metrics-and-indicators.
Clicking on the Host details link takes you to the Hosts view tab, that displays information about all configured hosts in the selected Hyper-V cluster. For more information, Hosts-page-in-the-Hyper-V-Overview-view.
- Tags panel: Displays tags, if any, that are associated with the cluster. For more information, see Working-with-tag-filters.
Summary information: The Summary tab, that is displayed by default, displays performance details for the selected cluster in a horizontal summary table, as well as charts.
Core metrics for the selected entity are displayed as analysis charts, depending on available data. At the bottom of each chart is a link that takes you to the Data Explorer view for the specific resource type, and displays charts and information for a larger set of metrics. For more information, see Host-page-in-the-Hyper-V-Data-Explorer-view.
You can download charts, annotate them, print them, and so on. For more information, see Managing-charts.
- Configuration Details: The Configuration Details tab displays the configuration metrics for the cluster.

Using data filters and other controls in tables
You can sort and filter the information that is displayed in tables to suit your need. For instance, you can show or hide columns, filter tables on particular domains, and so on.
For more information, see Sorting-a-table-in-the-Helix-Capacity-Optimization-Dashboard and Using-filtering-options-in-the-Helix-Capacity-Optimization-Dashboard.
