Partitions page in the AIX PowerVM view

The Partitions page in the AIX PowerVM view provides an overview of the available partitions in the PowerVM virtualization environment, including details about online processors, CPU and memory utilization, memory configured, and more.

  • By default, the metric tables in this view are filtered on all domains. Use the domain filter options to select the required domain from the table.
  • By default, the summarization time range for all metrics is set to Last 30 days. Use the time filter options controls to select an alternate range.

For detailed information on how to use filters, see Using-filtering-options-in-the-Helix-Capacity-Optimization-Dashboard.

The following figure shows the PowerVM Partitions tab:

Viewing the PowerVM Partitions table

The PowerVM Partitions table lists all PowerVM partitions present in the selected frame.

By default, some columns are hidden. You can show or hide columns using the action menuaction_menu.pngthat is located next to the Allocated Capacity table title. For more information, see Sorting a table in the Helix Capacity Optimization Dashboard.

Each row corresponds to a PowerVM partition and shows the following information.

Notes

Metrics marked with ➕️ are displayed only if Active Memory Expansion (AME) is enabled and turned on.

Viewing the PowerVM partition details page

To view the details page for a particular partition, click the name of the partition in the Partitions column. The Partition details page displays the following information:

  • General details: General partition details, such as name, type, description, number of elements within it, and tags are displayed at the top of the page.
  • Related Information panel: Displays links to detailed pages for Thresholds and Partition details.
  • Tags panel: Displays tags, if any, that are associated with the pool.  For more information, see Working-with-tag-filters
  • Summary information: The Summary tab, that is displayed by default, displays performance details for the selected pool in a horizontal summary table, as well as charts.

Excerpt named NewSummaryCharts was not found in document xwiki:IT-Operations-Management.Continuous-Optimization.BMC-Helix-Capacity-Optimization.hoco1911.Using.Using-views-to-analyze-infrastructure-and-virtual-data.Out-of-the-box-capacity-views.Virtualization-views.AIX-views.AIX-PowerVM-view.Hosts-page-in-the-AIX-PowerVM-view.WebHome.
You can download charts, annotate them, print them, and so on. For more information, see Managing-charts.

  • Configuration Details: The Configuration Details tab displays the configuration metrics for the pool.
  • File Systems: The File Systemstab displays information related to the file system for all partitions, or the selected partition.
  • Donated CPU Busy/Idle, and Active Virtual Processor charts

Viewing the Memory Available chart

The Partition details page as described in the preceding section contains a Memory Available chart. You can use this chart to view the amount of memory available for use by processes. This metric is available for AIX 7.1, AIX 6.1 (TL2 or higher) and AIX 5.3 (TL9 or higher) systems. AIX computes available memory by taking into account the amount of free memory and the minimum memory needed for the file system cache.

Viewing the Donated CPU Busy/Idle chart

The Partition details page as described in the preceding section contains a Donated CPU Busy/Idle chart. You can use this chart to understand if the selected DLPAR is donating CPU cycles periodically. If the DLPAR is always donating the same amount or never donating cycles, then a processor reconfiguration may be a better option than Shared-Dedicated mode.

This chart will be displayed if Shared-Dedicated mode is turned ON for DLPARs. If the selected DLPAR donates cycles to the Pool, the chart will display the amount of donated cycles.

Viewing the Active Virtual Processors chart

The Partition details page as described in the preceding section contains an Active Virtual Processors chart that has an Hourly resolution. You can use this chart to understand how many virtual processors are active during peak load, and also to scale up or down the number of configured virtual processors.

Processor Folding causes the hypervisor to reduce the number of virtual processors based on the load on the system. This improves the efficiency of the system by reducing the overhead of running additional processors and also avoiding unnecessary context switches.

Viewing File Systems information

The File Systems tab has a summary table that displays the following information related to the file system for all partitions, or the selected partition.

For more information on the Days to Saturation and other indicator parameters used for metric computations in this view, see Indicators.

Using data filters and other controls in tables

You can sort and filter the information that is displayed in tables to suit your need. For instance, you can show or hide columns, filter tables on particular domains, and so on.

You can use the Frameid and Poolid filters to displays partitions contained in the selected frame, or pool.

For more information, see Sorting a table in the Helix Capacity Optimization Dashboard and Using filtering options in the Helix Capacity Optimization Dashboard.
