Host/Cluster Results in a consolidation virtualization study
This report shows the total resource use of the host/cluster at the top of the report, and a table providing performance metrics for each guest on the host/cluster. There is a Virtual Host report for each virtual host in the Consolidation Study.
This report shows the overall projected performance statistics for the virtual host server in the summary section at the top, as well as the list of candidate computers that have been assigned to the virtual host in the table.
Candidates Assigned
The following table provides descriptions for the columns in the table:
Column | Description |
|---|---|
Guest | The name of the candidate computer that has been assigned to this virtual host as a guest system. |
Host | The name of the source host. |
OS | The operating system type of the candidate computer. |
Description | Optionally, click in this column row to add a brief description for the guest. |
Peak Perf Rating Used | The highest projected SPECint performance rating that will be used by the guest, out of the overall performance rating capacity of the virtual host. |
Avg Perf Rating Used | The average performance rating used by the guest, out of the overall performance rating of the virtual host. |
Before | Avg Mem Used (GB): The average memory utilization of the source computer for the selected time period. |
Mem Cfg (GB): The average amount of memory configured for the source computer during the selected time period. | |
After | Avg Mem Used (GB): The average memory utilization of the source computer for the selected time period. |
Mem Cfg (GB): The average amount of memory configured for the source computer during the selected time period. | |
Avg IO (MB/sec) | The average IO rate of all for this guest on the host server. |
Avg Net (MB/sec) | The average network throughput for this guest on the host server. |
Previous Location | The location of the candidate before assignment to the target. |
Host table
The Host table provides the basic performance information for the virtual hosts planned as a result of the study.
Use this report is to check if there are any constraints that might be preventing the virtual hosts from being more effectively utilized. If you feel that there are too many new virtual hosts recommended by the study, review the After columns to see where there is a constraint that is creating additional hosts.
If there are more virtual hosts than you expect, it is possible that there is a resource or configuration constraint that is preventing the virtual hosts from being effectively utilized. To help you locate constraints in the summary table, a constraint message is displayed below the table when there are at least two targets and at least one of them is a new virtual host.
For example, if the message indicates that the constraint is Performance Rating Used, and more than one new host has been created, then you can increase the CPU threshold or change the CPU model to one with a higher Performance Rating. To access the Hardware Selector page to change the CPU model type for the new virtual host, click Change Parameters and then Change CPU Model.
The Virtual Host column provides a link to a more detailed report for the virtual host. Click on the virtual host name to view the Virtual Host report.
The following table provides descriptions for the columns in this report.
Column | Description |
|---|---|
Target Host | The host server name, which is a link to the detail report for the host server. |
Description | A description for the virtual host, if one has been entered. If no description has been entered, the performance rating of the host server is shown if it is an existing virtual host. |
Before | Nbr of Guests: The total number of new and existing guests that are assigned to this virtual host. This value is shown in bold type if it is equal to the Maximum Guests per Host value shown in the Virtualization Parameters section of the Deployment Summary. |
CPU Util (%): The CPU utilization that would be used for any host server. If this is a new host, only the After value is shown. | |
Mem Util (%): The memory utilization of the host server. If this is a new host, only the After value is shown. | |
Mem Cfg (GB): The average amount of memory configured for the host server. If this is a new host, only the After value is shown. | |
Avg IO (MB/sec): The average IO rate of all of the guests on the host server. | |
Stg Used (%): The percentage of host storage utilized. | |
After | Nbr of Guests: The total number of new and existing guests that are assigned to this virtual host. |
It may take several iterations of this process before you are satisfied with the consolidation results. For example, after reviewing this report, you may decide that there are source computers assigned to a virtual host which you want to move to a different host. In this case, click Change Assignments to display the Change Source-to-Target Assignments page. On this page you can move source computers from one virtual host to another.
After you are satisfied, you can save the study for future reference and print a copy in PDF format, Rich Text Format (RTF), or Excel sheet (XLS). In addition, you can print the study.
