Specifying study parameters and selecting virtual targets

The Consolidate to Virtual - Select Targets page is displayed after selecting consolidation candidates and reviewing exceptions.

To select virtual targets

Follow the steps given below to select the virtual targets for the study:

  1. Type the Study Name and Description for the study.
  2. Select Place all candidates on one target to place all the candidates together on a single virtual target which has the maximum capacity. Clear the check box to spread the candidates among the selected targets.
  3. Click Set Affinity to specify affinity relationships which indicate which computer candidates cannot reside on the same virtual host, and which computer candidates must reside on the same virtual host. For details, see Setting-affinity-relationships-in-a-virtualization-study.
  4. From the Target Virtual Hosts pane, you can choose to create new virtual hosts for this study, select one or more existing virtual targets to include in the study, or both. Virtual hosts, pools and clusters are the targets on which the candidate computers will be consolidated.
  5. Click Advanced to define virtualization parameters such as the maximum number of guests allowed for target hosts (new or existing), as well as the amount of CPU overhead that will be used by the target host. You can also set thresholds for the maximum amount of the host server CPU and memory that can be used by virtual guests.

Verify that the default settings from the Study Profile apply to your virtualization goals, or update the values. See Changing-virtualization-parameters-for-a-virtualization-study.

  6. Click Next to view the consolidation results.
For information about reviewing the results of the consolidation study, see Reviewing-virtualization-study-results.

Create New Virtual Hosts

Select this option to create new virtual hosts as needed using the physical configuration shown in the table.

The following table describes the columns in the Create New Hardware table.

Use Existing Virtual Targets

Select this option to include existing virtual targets in the study. Use the Target Filter to change the category of the targets displayed (clusters, pools, or hosts) or create your own filter to narrow down the target options. The hosts, pools and clusters you select are used as virtual targets for consolidation candidate computers.

Warning

Note

If you select a pool or cluster option for the Target Filter (VMware clusters, for example), all matching pools or clusters found in the Workspace are displayed. If you select a host option for Target Filter (Xen hosts, for example), only the matching hosts contained in the domain/entity filter specified in Selecting-data-for-a-virtualization-study are displayed. You can use the Create your own Cluster/Pool/Host filter option to apply specific selection criteria to narrow your list of targets. See Creating-computer-filters-for-a-virtualization-study for details on creating filters.

The following table describes the columns in the Use Existing Virtual Targets table.
