Consolidation metrics in a virtualization study

The Consolidation view and Optimizer simulate the allocation of a candidate onto a target. To correctly evaluate the effects of this allocation, the following resource metrics are required:

• CPU-related metrics:
  • CPU_NUM
  • CPU_MHZ
  • CPU_UTIL (if available, CPU_UTILMHZ is preferred; otherwise, it is calculated via CPU_UTIL, CPU_NUM, CPU_MHZ)
  • CPU_ENTC_CONS (only for AIX consolidation)

• Memory-related metrics:
  • MEM_UTIL
  • TOTAL_REAL_MEM
  • MEM_GRANTED or MEM_CONSUMED (for VMware consolidation and virtual machines only; obtained from log level 2 in VMware)

• Bandwidth-related metrics:
  • NET_BIT_RATE
  • NET_BANDWIDTH

• Disk-related metrics:
  • DISK_TRANSFER_RATE (optional)
  • DISK_MAX_TRANSFER_RATE (optional)

The following resource metrics can be (optionally) specified for compatibility tagging and checks:

• OS_TYPE
• OS_VER
• CPU_MODEL
• HW_MODEL
