Tracking license usage of your environment

Use the License Tracking utility to generate license usage reports (XML and HTML formats). These reports provide the count or number of managed services and average number of server endpoints that are currently consumed in your environment. You can then compare these numbers with the numbers that you are entitled to use based on your license.

All system entities, including the Unassigned and Dismissed entities are counted. To exclude the entities from the Unassigned and Dismissed folder in the reports, you need to purge the entities. For details, see Enabling automatic dismissal and purging of systems and business drivers.

Overview

The license summary for BMC Helix Capacity Optimization for Servers provides the following details:

  • Overall number of managed systems
  • Overall number of managed systems that are distinct by name
  • Total number of managed systems imported from Capacity Agents
  • Total number of managed systems imported from Capacity Agents that are distinct by name
  • Overall number of managed network devices
  • Overall number of managed ports

To view details of the count of product licenses reported by License Tracking utility, you can create diagnostic reports using the following Advanced report templates:

  • Auditing - Managed Servers - Provides the count and details of managed systems.
  • Auditing - Managed Network and Storage Entities - Provides the count and details of managed network and storage entities.

The report templates enable you to identify the distinct managed systems, network devices, and storage entities to optimize the number of product licenses.

For example, if the total number of managed systems is 70 and total number of managed systems that are distinct by name is 50, using the Auditing - Managed Servers as the template for Diagnostic report, you can identify the systems that have the same name and are using product licenses.

If you have installed the BMC License Usage Collection Utility, you can enter the host name and port number to connect to the BMC Helix Capacity Optimization server and generate the license summary. The BMC License Usage Collection Utility uses the License Utility API in the backend. For more information, see the following topics:

Restrictions in the license summary

The following restrictions are applicable in the license summary:

  • The license summary counts only distributed (not mainframe related) entities according to the managed systems, even when the “BMC TrueSight Capacity Optimization for Mainframe” add-on is installed.
  • The license summary does not support tracking of the number of CPU sockets, which can represent the Unit of Measure used for your BMC Helix Capacity Optimization license entitlement. The number of CPU sockets is usually not a configuration metric provided by the data sources integrated by BMC Helix Capacity Optimization.
  • The license summary counts the Cloud Cost Control entities as well. If you have not installed Cloud Cost Control, ignore this count from the licensing report.
