Viewing the details of reservation targets

A Reservation Target is a system that contains resources such as CPU, Memory, and Storage. They can also contain reservation items such as Virtual Machines in a VMware vSphere cluster. You can evaluate the status of Reservation Targets (and its resources), and subsequently plan Onboarding events to allocate additional resources as required.

The following sections provide descriptions for the fields displayed:

Viewing Reservation Targets

Click Reservations > Reservation Targets to view the Reservation Targets table, which lists all Reservation Targets that are aggregated to one or more Capacity Pools.

For Resource Comparison Method, select Allocation to view values that include reservations, or select Utilization to display the current values.

Note

The alert status for Reservation Targets and Capacity Pools is based on the estimation method that is selected in the Settings page. The default method is Allocation.

Viewing details for a Reservation Target

Click the name of the Reservation Target to view details.

The Type of virtualization technology used by the Reservation Target and Tags added to the Reservation Target are displayed on top.

Tags that are relevant to the Reservation Target type are added by default. Click new tag.png to add custom tags to the Reservation Target, these tags can be used during Reservation placement.

For Resource Comparison Method, select Allocation to view values that include reservations or select Utilization field to display the current values.

The first table on the screen displays the details for the Current Resources and Virtual Machines.

If you select Allocation, the Current Resources bars are populated only if there are reservations that are in the realized status. For more information, see the following table:The [confluence_table-plus] macro is a standalone macro and it cannot be used inline. Click on this message for details.

Note

If the Baseline projected growths for CPU Utilization is specified in the Using-policies-to-specify-thresholds-in-Capacity-Pools page, the change is reflected in the Reservation target detail page (Forecasted Spare VMs column) and in the Placement page. During placement, free resources that are displayed also take into account any specified projected growth, which ensures that enough capacity will be available to place reservation items.

Viewing the committed Reservations

The Committed Reservations section lists the reservations committed for the selected Reservation Target.

Viewing and adding Onboardings

The Onboardings section lists the Onboarding and Offboarding events for the selected Reservation Target.

Adding an Onboarding event

Follow the steps given below to add an onboarding event.

  1. Click ➕️ Add Onboarding to add an onboarding event.
  2. Type a Name and Description for the Onboarding event.
  3. Select an Onboarding date. The effective date from which the capacity will be onboarded to the Reservation Target OR a hypothetical Reservation Target will be added to a Capacity Pool.
  4. Select an Offboarding date. The date on which the capacity will be offboarded from the Reservation Target OR the hypothetical Reservation Target will be removed from a Capacity Pool.
  5. Select the Realization mode to be used for the onboarding event. This value overrides the value specified in the Settings tab.
    • Automatic - The onboarding event event will be automatically realized on the selected date.
    • Manual - The onboarding event has to be manually realized and expired. You must click edit icon.png for a Reservation from the Managing-reservations screen, and then click Realize to actuate the onboarding event. After an onboarding event is realized, click Expire to end it.
  6. From Add onboarding resources, select one of the following:

    • Use existing templates: Select an existing template from the Onboard resource instances list. Select this option to use the resources instances available in the existing templates, the content depends on the type of Reservation Target.  For example, you can plan onboarding of a new host on a cluster or a new hypothetical target inside a pool if your infrastructure is standardized.
    • Specify custom resources: Click ➕️ Add instance to add instances to the Custom resource instances list. Select this option to specify a custom resource to be onboarded without creating a system template in the Workspace section. For example, you can plan onboarding of additional resources such as Memory on an existing Reservation Target.

You can view and edit the following details:

  7. Click Save.
Adding an Offboarding event

Follow the steps given below to add an offboarding event.

  1. Click ➕️ Add Offboarding to add an Offboarding event.
  2. Type a Name and Description for the Offboarding event.
  3. Select an Offboarding date. The date on which the capacity will be offboarded from the Reservation Target OR the hypothetical Reservation Target will be removed from a Capacity Pool.
  4. Select the Realization mode:
    1. Automatic - The offboarding event will be automatically realized on the selected date.
    2. Manual - The offboarding event has to be manually realized and expired.
  5. From Remove capacity from a Reservation Target, select a Reservation Target that you want to remove from the Capacity Pool.
  6. Select one of the options to remove offboarding resources from a Reservation Target:
    1. Use existing templates -  Templates can be used to plan removing resources. For example, you can use existing templates to remove a host from a cluster. You can specify custom resources as well for this purpose. However, templates are easier to use if your infrastructure is standardized.
    2. Specify custom resources - Custom resources can be used to plan removing resources, for example, 2Gb of ram from an existing target.

Viewing charts for a Reservation Target

The charts are used to display the forecasted capacity for the Reservation Target. They also depict the list of all Reservations and Onboardings targeted on the Reservation Target.

The charts display Reservations; if you have added onboarding or offboarding events, they also reflect that in the total capacity and the relative thresholds.

Various charts are available for each Reservation Target. The following table displays the data displayed for each chart.

Viewing details for a Capacity Pool

Click the name of the Capacity Pool to view details. For more information, see Viewing the details for a Capacity Pool.

Name of the resource that will be used for Onboarding.

    Resources

Number of CPUs, CPU (speed/core fractions), CPU Entitlement, Memory, and Disk space available for the corresponding resource.

    OS

The operating system used by the resource. (This column is available when using an existing template only)

    Tech
