Viewing and editing onboarding and offboarding events


An Onboarding event is an event in the future that represents a known allocation of resources to the infrastructure. For example, additional memory needs to be allocated to a data center in New York. You can add an additional host to a cluster or add a cluster to the Capacity Pool. This incremental change in capacity is taken into consideration for estimating the available resources for future reservation events.

The following sections describe the various tasks that can be performed from this screen.

Onboarding committed - Realization mode is manual. Onboarding date is passed but Onboarding still not realized.

The Onboarding has been committed and is considered as feasible. However, the Realization mode for the Onboarding is set to manual and the date has passed without the Onboarding being realized. You must edit the event to update the onboarding/offboarding date or realize/expire the event.

The Onboarding has been realized. The Realization mode of the Onboarding that has been realized is set to manual and the Offboarding date has been passed without the Onboarding being marked as expired.

Name

The custom name entered for the onboarding/offboarding event

Id

A unique ID generated by the system for each onboarding/offboarding event

Type

Displays if the event is an onboarding event or offboarding event.

Onboarding date

Displays the date from which the onboarding is applicable

Offboarding date

Displays the date till after which the onboarding will release and the additional capacity will not be available

Onboarding target

Displays the Reservation Target or Capacity Pool depending on the type of onboarding

Resources

Displays various resources, such as number of systems, CPU speed, Memory, and Disk space

Status

Displays the status for each onboarding/offboarding event

Edit

Click edit_thresh.png to edit the corresponding onboarding/offboarding event

Delete

Click delete_thresh.png to delete the corresponding onboarding/offboarding event

Adding an Onboarding event

Click Reservations > Onboardings to navigate to the Onboardings screen.

  1. Click ➕️ Add Onboarding to add an onboarding event.
  2. Type a Name and Description for the Onboarding event.
  3. Select an Onboarding date. The effective date from which the capacity will be onboarded to the Reservation Target OR a hypothetical Reservation Target will be added to a Capacity Pool.
  4. Select an Offboarding date. The date on which the capacity will be offboarded from the Reservation Target OR the hypothetical Reservation Target will be removed from a Capacity Pool.
  5. Select the Realization mode to be used for the onboarding event. This value overrides the value specified in the Settings tab.
    • Automatic - The onboarding event event will be automatically realized on the selected date.
    • Manual - The onboarding event has to be manually realized and expired. You must click edit icon.png for a Reservation from the Managing-reservations screen, and then click Realize to actuate the onboarding event. After an onboarding event is realized, click Expire to end it.
  6. From Select Onboarding type, select one of the following:
    1. If you select Add capacity to a Reservation Target, you can select a Reservation Target. You must then select onboarding resources using system template instances or custom resources.
    2. If you select Add a hypothetical Reservation Target to a Capacity Pool, you can select a Capacity Pool. You must then select onboarding resources using system template instances or custom resources.
  7. From Add onboarding resources, select one of the following:
    1. If you select Use existing templates, you must select an existing template from the Onboard resource instances list. Select this option to use the resources instances available in the existing templates, the content depends on the type of Reservation Target.  For example, you can plan onboarding of a new host on a cluster or a new hypothetical target inside a pool if your infrastructure is standardized.
    2. If you select Specify custom resources, you can click ➕️ Add instance to add instances to the Custom resource instances list. Select this option to specify a custom resource to be onboarded without creating a system template in the Workspace section. For example, you can plan onboarding of additional resources such as Memory on an existing Reservation Target.

      You can view and edit the following details:

      Column

      Description

      Instances

      The number of instances for each resource that you want to reserve.

      Name

      Name of the resource that will be used for Onboarding.

      Resources

      Number of CPUs, CPU (speed/core fractions), CPU Entitlement, Memory, and Disk space available for the corresponding resource.

      OS

      The operating system used by the resource. (This column is available when using an existing template only)

      Tech

      The virtualization technology used by the resource. (This column is available when using an existing template only)

Adding an Offboarding event

Click Reservations > Onboardings to navigate to the Onboardings screen. You must use an Offboarding event if you plan to remove capacity from a Reservation Target.

  1. Click ➕️ Add Offboarding to add an Offboarding event.
  2. Type a Name and Description for the Offboarding event.
  3. Select an Offboarding date. The date on which the capacity will be offboarded from the Reservation Target OR the hypothetical Reservation Target will be removed from a Capacity Pool.
  4. Select the Realization mode:
    1. Automatic - The offboarding event will be automatically realized on the selected date.
    2. Manual - The offboarding event has to be manually realized and expired.
  5. From Remove capacity from a Reservation Target, select a Reservation Target that you want to remove from the Capacity Pool.
  6. Select one of the options to remove offboarding resources from a Reservation Target:
    1. Use existing templates -  Templates can be used to plan removing resources. For example, you can use existing templates to remove a host from a cluster. You can specify custom resources as well for this purpose. However, templates are easier to use if your infrastructure is standardized.
    2. Specify custom resources - Custom resources can be used to plan removing resources, for example, 2Gb of ram from an existing target.
