Using projected growth in Reservations

This topic provides an example that illustrates how you can use baseline projected growth values to do better capacity management.

Consider Paul, a capacity planner, who wants to better manage CPU utilization for VMware clusters in his infrastructure.

The expected growth on CPU Utilization for VMware Clusters belonging to the Capacity Pool that he is monitoring is two percent monthly. To ensure that he does not reserve more capacity than available, Paul wants a way to specify this information in BMC Helix Capacity Optimization. This insight ensures that reservation-aware capacity management takes into account the expected growth value while calculating forecasted spare VMs for reservation targets. Paul can then predict whether the capacity of one of the spare VMs will be exhausted.

Paul can set these projections in the Policies page. Here, Paul can also see that the baseline projected growth for CPU utilization of the VMware Cluster is actually 2.7 percent monthly. He can now reconsider the value to be specified as projected growth.

After Paul specifies the projected growth for CPU Utilization, he can see its effect on utilization in charts, both in the Reservations target detail page and in the Placement page. During the reservation placement, the free resources that are displayed take into account the specified projected growth value. This evaluation ensures that enough capacity will be available to place some reservation items.
