Placement Map for a consolidation study
Select the Placement Map tab to view the placement maps for the consolidation study.
On the left side of a placement map, all targets in the study are represented as folders. Inside each target, there is a list of contained guests (either existing or simulated).
The structure appears as a treemap in the main area of the Placement Maps tab.
A treemap reflects the relative values of a selected resource allocation metric for each target host and guest. The size of each box, or leaf, in the treemap is proportional to its resource utilization, and its color also reflects characteristics of the guest, depending on the settings. White boxes marked FREE are unused resources.
To select the chart type and view data
From Chart Type, select one of the following:
- CPU Utilization Relative Peak: It is the difference between the average CPU utilization and the peak CPU expressed in the benchmark system that you have selected for the basis of your study. Move your mouse pointer over the treemap cell to view the value.
- Select Candidates > Filtered Candidates to view the "measured" peak and average CPU, which shows Peak CPU Util (%) and Avg CPU Util (%).
- Select Consolidation Results > Candidate Assignments to view the same relationship translated into benchmark units relative to the selected CPU hardware, which shows Peak Perf Rating Used and Avg Perf Rating Used.
- Memory Utilization Relative Peak: It is the difference between the average memory utilization and the peak memory expressed in the benchmark system that you have selected for the basis of your study. Move your mouse pointer over the treemap cell to view the value.
Note: The values for Memory Utilization Relative Peak will always be 0, since peak memory utilization is not used as an input to the Virtual Planner study. Only average memory utilization is used as an input.
To view data using the interactive treemap
- Move the mouse cursor over the box that represents the guest, to view its data.
- To limit the scope of a treemap to a specific host, do one of the following:
- From the list of hosts on the left, double-click the host name. (To revert the treemap to show all target hosts, double-click again on the host name.)
- In the treemap, click the host name. (To revert the treemap to show all target hosts, click again on the host name in the treemap.)
A search box and map legend are displayed on the right. To search for a host, type a search string in the box, and then click
.
To include free resources in the treemap, at the top of the map, next to Chart Type, select Show Free Resources.
