Setting affinity relationships in a virtualization study
When reviewing the list of guests on the Targets page page, you may decide that there are specific guest computers that you do not want assigned to the same virtual host.
Affinity relationships can be established between specific systems or defined by using system and business attribute information (systems belonging to the Order Entry department cannot coreside with systems assigned to the Database Server application).
Use the Apply Affinity Rules page to set affinity relationships between source computers or guests, specifying which ones must co-reside on the same virtual host and which ones must reside on different hosts. For example, one of the source computers may be a backup server for another source computer, which you would not want to co-reside on the same virtual host.
To set an affinity relationship for candidate computers
- Click Set Affinity on the Targets page to display the Apply-Affinity Rules page. Each affinity condition can be interpreted as "systems with all the attribute values specified on the left can/cannot co-reside with systems matching all the attribute values specified on the right".
- Choose the applicable affinity rule and click Save.
The affinity rule will be applied. - If there are no affinity rules available you must create one. Click Set Affinity by Name... to create an affinity rule based on name or click Create Affinity Rule... to create a rule based on attributes .
- Select two or more computers for which this relationship type applies.
- Click Set.
- When you are done with setting affinity relationships, click Save.
To clear an affinity relationship
- Select the type of affinity relationship at the top of the page.
- Select the computers for which you want to remove the relationship. Clearing a relationship is reciprocal between candidate computers. For example, if computer A and computer B have an affinity relationship and you select computer A, then computer B's relationship with computer A is also cleared, even if you did not select computer B.
- Click Clear.
When you have finished clearing affinity relationships, click Save.
