Creating a study to project growth

Estimate the resource utilizations and capacity requirements for your virtual environment due to a projected percentage growth of the current resource demand. Select Project Growth after selecting data for your virtualization study to display the Project Growth - Select Targets page.

To select existing environment and parameters for growth study

Follow the steps given below to create a new study:

  1. Select a Study Profile from the Study Profile drop-down list.
  2. Type the Study Name and Description for the study.
  3. Click View Exceptions to review the reported exceptions and verify that no important systems have been excluded due to data issues.
  4. Use any of the predefined filters from the Target Filter drop down list or create your own filters to dynamically narrow down and select consolidation candidates. To create a custom computer filter, select Create your own Host filter. For more information, see Creating-computer-filters-for-a-virtualization-study.
  5. Select the existing target environment to use as the baseline for the growth from the list of clusters, hosts and pools shown in the Target Virtual Hosts table. You must select at least one existing target for a growth study.

    Success

Click on any of the columns in the Filtered Computer table to sort the list of computers by the value in that column. Click the column header again to reverse the sort order.

  6. If you require new resources to be made available to handle the growth in demand, select the Create New Virtual Hosts check box, and specify the configuration to use for the new hardware.
  7. Use the Set Affinity and Advanced buttons to set the study parameters as needed.
  8. Enter the percentage growth for Growth for Existing Virtual Environment that indicates the increase in work that you expect to be added to the virtual environment. This value must be greater than 0.
The percentage growth is applied to the number of guests selected in the study.
For example, if there are 200 guests selected in the study and 10% growth is specified, then 20 new growth guests are added. The growth guests are an average of resource usage of all selected guests in the study, and they are named as GrowthGuest[0…n].

    Additional information

Use the calendar icon to modify the Time Period for your study only if necessary. All the information displayed on the page will be refreshed, and existing selections will be discarded

  9. Click Next to view the Project Growth - Growth Results page.
