Saving a virtual server's state

You can save the state of a virtual server to disk by taking a virtual machine state snapshot. The snapshot can optionally include the virtual machine's memory state. You can use VMware's Virtual Infrastructure Client to view the snapshot. The snapshot is stored in the following location:

VMware/Virtual Machines/<vmName>/Options/General/Snapshot Directory

where <vmName> is the name of a virtual server.

To create a Virtual Machine state snapshot

  1. In the Servers folder, right-click a vCenter server, select Browse, and expand the Live node.
  2. Expand the VMware vCenter Server object type and then expand the Virtual Machines node. The Virtual Machines node shows all virtual machines configured within the vCenter server.
  3. Right-click a virtual machine. From the pop-up menu, select SnapshotVM. The Enter Action Parameters dialog displays.
  4. For Name, enter an identifying name for the virtual machine state snapshot. For Description, you can optionally provide descriptive text.
  5. If the snapshot should include the virtual machine's memory, select Yes for the snapmemory option.
  6. Click OK.
