Installing only the RSCD agent (Linux and UNIX)

This topic provides instructions for installing only the RSCD agent on an Oracle Solaris, Linux, IBM AIX, or HP-UX host computer when BMC Server Automation has never been installed on the computer before. The topic contains the following sections:

Before you begin

  • Optionally, set the INSTALL_FILES_TEMP environment variable to a valid, writable directory. If this variable is set, the installer files are stored in that location, thereby reducing the disk space requirements for /tmp during the installation. At the operating system command line, enter the following commands:

    INSTALL_FILES_TEMP=<temporaryDirLocation>
    export INSTALL_FILES_TEMP

For more information, see Methods for reducing installation space on Linux and UNIX.

  • If you are installing the RSCD agent on a computer running Red Hat Enterprise Linux version 6 x64 KVM, make sure that the glibc package is installed.

To install only the RSCD agent

  1.  Navigate to the directory containing installation files and run the installation script for the RSCD agent. Script names follow the convention: RSCDversion-platform. For a list of all the different agent installation files for the various platforms, see Installation-programs-for-BMC-Server-Automation.
You must execute the installation from a root shell. Do not execute the installation script from a non-root account.
  2. The following message is displayed:
Please choose the installation directory. [/opt/bmc/bladelogic]
  3. To install the RSCD agent in /opt/bmc/bladelogic, press Enter. Or enter another directory path.
A message prompts you to choose a language for the installation program.
  4. Enter the number representing the language that you want to use for the installation.
     A welcome message is displayed.
  5. Press Enter.
     The following message is displayed:
Do you agree to the terms of the license agreement (y for Yes) ?
  6. Press y.
    The following message is displayed:

    ============== Select Installation Components =============
    Server Utilities
    1 - RSCD Agent
    9 - Start the installation
    A - Select all components
    Select component
  7. Enter 1.
A plus sign (+) appears next to the RSCD Agent to indicate you have chosen to install it.
  8. Enter 9.
A message is displayed, asking you if you want to continue.
  9. Enter y.
  10. Follow the instructions in the installation script.
Installation is complete. The agent starts automatically.

    Warning

    Note

If you have enabled Security-Enhanced Linux (SELinux), during the agent installation you are prompted to allow the installer to alter settings for SELinux. These setting changes modify the security settings to allow assets to be deployed successfully. If you do not allow the installer to alter SELinux settings, or you enable SELinux after the agent installation, you must disable SELinux or run the following commands to allow assets to be deployed successfully:

    setsebool -P allow_execstack=1
    setsebool -P allow_execmod=1

For additional information on restricting access to RSCD agents, see How BMC Server Automation grants access to RSCD agents.

Additional installation options

To perform a silent installation of an RSCD agent, see Using-silent-mode-to-install-an-RSCD-agent-Linux-and-UNIX.

For several Linux and UNIX platforms, you can choose between a shell-based (.sh) installer and a native installer (.bff for AIX, .rpm for Linux, or .gz for Solaris). You might prefer to use the native installer, for example, to install in bulk. For more information about the platforms that support installation using a native installer, see Supported platforms for native installers. For more information about the platforms that support installation using a native installer, see "Supported platforms for native installers" under Supported-platforms-for-version-8-7.For more information about the installation processes for native installers, see the following pages:

BMC Server Automation provides a special installer for RSCD agents on Oracle Solaris or IBM AIX. You must run this installer to use the virtualization infrastructure management capability on the BMC Server Automation Console. See Setting-up-BMC-Server-Automation-for-virtual-environments

Warning

Note

As of vSphere 5.0, VMware only supports installation of ESXi, which is an appliance OS, and does not support installing an RSCD agent. All management of ESXi must be done via an RSCD agent on the vCenter Control server, as described in Setting-up-a-VMware-vSphere-environment.

Where to go from here

To use the BLCLI or the blcred utility, you must install the BMC Server Automation Console. For information, see Installing-the-BMC-Server-Automation-Console-Linux-and-UNIX.
