Viewing service monitoring activities in the legacy console

When a service monitoring rule is triggered, BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management records that activity. You can view the activities taken for all policies on the Activities display, which is located in the Services section of the My Cloud Services console. This information can help you fine-tune your monitoring policies. For example, you can see at a glance when specific rules were triggered, and what actions were taken, which might help you adjust the waiting periods or threshold clauses for those rules based on the actual performance of those services. The Activities display can also help you troubleshoot service issues. For example, you can see which rules and actions were triggered near the same time, and then drill down on those actions to get more detail about the remediation changes made.

You can see the following information about service monitoring activities:

  • The type of activity
  • Whether the activity was successful
  • When the activity started and completed
  • The threshold that was breached to trigger the activity
  • The name of the rule that triggered the activity
  • A summary of the activity, such as the name of a server that was added, or an error message if the activity failed

If you have opened the Activities display from a specific policy rule in the Policies display, the list of activities is filtered to show only the activities related to the policy rule. A note at the top of the Activities table indicates this, as shown in the following image:

To change the data shown in the Activities display

  • The Activities display lists activities for the service selected in the Service Monitoring column. To view activities for a different service, click a different service name.
  • The default window of reporting is for the most recent hour. If you want to see more information for the selected service, select 1 day, 1 week, 2 weeks, or All in the View data for past drop-down field. BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management stores activities for the 30 days.
  • If you arrived at the Activities display by clicking the Show Activity icon activities_icon.bmp for a rule on the Policies display, the list is filtered to show activities only for that rule. To view activities for all rules for the selected service, click the service name in the Service Monitoring column.
  • To refresh the data in the Activities display, click the Refresh icon refresh_icon.bmp.

To view the rule that triggered an activity

To see the service monitoring rule that triggered an activity, click the name of the rule in the Rule Triggered column. This action opens the Policies display. If the corresponding rule was deleted, a message opens in the Policies display to explain that the rule was deleted.

To see detailed information about an activity

The Status Information column provides an overview about each activity. To see more detail for an activity, click the More Info link in the Status Information column. This link is available for successful add server and remove server activities, as well as any failed activity. In the case of a failed activity, this information includes the ID of the transaction and a stack trace useful to your technical team when troubleshooting the cause of the failure.
