Configuring the budget settings

Use the Budget tab in the Settings page to view and configure the budget cycle, budget thresholds, and default notifications settings that are applicable to all business services and cost pools in your multi-cloud environment. 

From the Budget tab in the Settings page, you can achieve the following goals:

  • Define and manage the budget cycle which can be monthly, quarterly, half-yearly, or yearly. 
  • Configure the budget thresholds to decide whether a business service or a cost pool is underspending, overspending, or in budget.
  • Configure the default settings for notifications conditions and email addresses. 
  • Evaluate notifications to trigger the email notifications to the specified email addresses.
Reference information

Business service: An IT service that directly supports a business process. For example, financial services, online banking services delivered by banks to its customers, or Human Resource (HR) services delivered by an HR department.

Budget: A budget is an allocated financial plan for a specific period of time.

Before you begin

  • Ensure that you have the required permissions to edit the Settings page. For more information, see Authorizing users to access TrueSight Cloud Cost Control.
  • To send the email notifications, ensure that you have configured the general email and notifications settings in the TrueSight Capacity Optimization console. For more information, see Notifications .

To configure the budget settings

  1. Access the Budget tab in the Settings page
    1. Log on to the TrueSight console.
    2. Expand the left navigation pane and select Cloud Cost Control.
      The Cloud Cost Control page is displayed.
    3. Click  Settings > Settings
      The Settings page is displayed.  
    4. Click the Budget tab.
    5. Click the Settings action menu and select Edit.
      The page refreshes and all the fields on the page are displayed in edit mode.
  2. Define and manage the budget cycle
    Specify the values for the following fields to define the budget cycle.

    Budget periodSelect a period from the list for the budget cycle. The following values are available:
    • Month
    • Quarter
    • Half Year
    • Year
    Fiscal year start month

    Select a month from the list from which the selected budget period will start.

    Note

    When you modify the defined budget cycle, the budget values for the business services and cost pools are automatically adjusted. For example, consider that the budget for a business service with a monthly budget cycle is $100. When you change the budget cycle from Month to Quarter, the budget value is automatically updated to $300.

    BMC recommends that after you modify the defined budget cycle, you must review the budget values for all the business services and cost pools.

  3. Configure the budget thresholds
    Specify the values for the following fields to set the thresholds for budget to decide whether a business service or a cost pool is underspending, overspending, or in budget.

    UnderspendersSpecify the threshold value in percentage. If the projected cost percentages for a business service or a cost pool is less than this value, it is classified as Underspender.
    Overspenders

    Specify the threshold value in percentage. If the projected cost percentages for a business service or a cost pool is greater than this value, it is classified as Overspender .

    If the projected cost percentage value for a business service or a cost pool is between the underspenders and overspenders thresholds values, it is classified as In budget. This classification information is displayed in the main Budget tab and the budget tab in the Business Service Cost Details page or Cost Pool Details page.

  4. Configure the default settings for notifications
    Enter the budget notification conditions and email addresses to send email notifications when the specified criteria are satisfied. These settings are the default settings for budget notifications that are applicable to all business services and cost pools in your environment. For requirements specific to a business service or a cost pool, these settings can be overridden using the Notifications option in the budget tab of the Business Service Cost Details page.  

    1. Configure the notification conditions.  denotes that the editing of the setting is enabled. All notifications settings are enabled, by default.
      Specify one or all of the following conditions: 
      • When the cost of the business service or the cost pool reaches the specified percentage of the assigned budget.
      • When the projected cost value crosses the assigned budget in less than the specified number of days.
      • When the projected cost value for the current month is more than the specified percentages in comparison with the previous month. 
        You can decide whether to send the notifications only for those business services or cost pools with budget assigned, or for all business services and cost pools in your environment.
        • Notify only when budget is assigned - Select this option to send notifications for business services and cost pools for which budget is assigned. 
        • Notify irrespective of budget being assigned or not - Select this option to send notifications irrespective of budget being assigned or not. This option allows you to receive notification even if you have not assigned any budget to the business service or the cost pool and want to compare the projected cost of the current month with the cost of the previous month.
    2. Specify the email addresses. Click + Add email address to enter a new email address and x to remove the address or x Clear All to remove all addresses. 

  5. Click Save.

To evaluate the notifications

Use Evaluate Notifications to evaluate and trigger the notifications to the specified email addresses if your business services or cost pools satisfy atleast one of the notification conditions.

  1. Access the Budget tab in the Settings page
    1. Log on to the TrueSight console.
    2. Expand the left navigation pane and select Cloud Cost Control.
      The Cloud Cost Control page is displayed.
    3. Click  Settings > Settings
      The Settings page is displayed.  
    4. Click the Budget tab.
  2. Click Evaluate Notifications in the Notifications - Default Settings section. The system triggers the notifications and the email notifications for all business services and cost pools that satisfy the notification conditions are sent to specified email addresses. 

    Consider the following example to configure the default settings for notifications and evaluate the notifications.
