Analyzing the overallocated VMs in your multi-cloud infrastructure

Use the Overallocated VMs to resize page to determine the VMs that have spare or underutilized resources. Also, for the identified VMs, you can view the out-of-the-box recommendations that suggest actions to resize these VMs and help you to optimize your costs.

Information

Overallocated VM recommendations are available for VMs in your AWS, Azure, and on-premises (vSphere and HyperV) infrastructure.

To access the page, in the navigation pane of the TrueSight console  , select  Cloud Cost Control  and click  Cost Optimization. By default, the Resource Usage page is displayed that provides a section with a summary of the total overallocated VMs in your infrastructure and the estimated saving that you can achieve by resizing them. For detailed recommendations per overallocated VM, click  <Number> Overallocated VMs to resize . The Overallocated VMs to resize page opens that p rovides a quick overview of the number of VMs that are overallocated and the estimated savings that you can achieve by terminating them. The page also displays details and recommendations per VM.  By default, the information for the current month is displayed.

From this page, you can achieve the following goals:

  • Determine the number of overallocated VMs in your multi-cloud infrastructure.
  • Determine the best and optimal VM sizes for the overallocated VMs to ensure cost savings.
  • Determine the total estimated savings that you can achieve by resizing the overallocated VMs.
  • View and compare the overallocated VMs across the public and on-premises cloud providers.
  • Analyze the total estimated savings that you can achieve by resizing the overallocated VMs.

To analyze the overallocated VMs in your multi-cloud infrastructure

  1. Determine the overallocated VMs in your infrastructure

    1. In the navigation pane of the TrueSight console  , select Cloud Cost Control  and click Cost Optimization. By default, the Resource Usage page is displayed

    2. Review the overallocated VMs section on the page that provides the following information:

      • Count of the total overallocated VMs in your infrastructure

      • Estimated savings that you can achieve by resizing the detected overallocated VMs

      • A donut chart that shows how the estimated savings are distributed across the providers.

  2. Analyze the overallocated VMs in detail

On the Resource Usage page, click the Overallocated VMs link.

The Overallocated VMs page opens. The table on the page lists all the overallocated VMs and their details such as estimated savings that you can achieve by resizing that VM, recommended instance type with the resized configuration, and current resource configuration and utilization.

Every recommendation has an Efficiency icon associated with it. The icon indicates the level of efficiency improvement. It is based on the estimated savings (in $) per month that you can achieve by implementing the recommended actions. One of the following icons is displayed:

Icon - Efficiency level

 - high

 - medium

 - low

The thresholds for calculating the efficiency level is defined in the associated optimizer rule.

Tip

You can quickly filter the table on a column value. For example, a specific account name. To do so:

a. Move your mouse over the column value that you want to filter the table data on.

b. If you see the Filter icon next to the value, click the value. Else, the column value cannot be used as a quick filter. The table displays the data based on the applied filter.

  1. 3. Review the recommendation details

To view the recommendation details, for a VM, click the corresponding Efficiency icon (For example. ).

The Recommendations window opens that provides the exact findings along with the recommended actions that you can take to manage the overallocated VM. The following screenshot shows a recommendation with sample data.

The following table explains the different fields that you see in the Recommendations window.
    FieldDescription
    SystemName of the virtual machine
Optimizer findingsBrief description of the issue
TypeRecommendation type. It is one of the configuration parameters in the optimizer rule that generates this recommendation
Severity/EfficiencyEfficiency level of the recommendation that is based on the estimated savings per month that you can achieve by implementing the recommended action

Optimizer ruleName of the associated optimizer rule
Recommended actionsSuggested actions that you can implement to optimize your costs
    Accuracy indicator

Indicates the level of accuracy or reliability of the resizing recommendation. For more information about how the recommendation is generated, see Overallocated VM recommendation.

You can click the icon to view its description.

The icon can have one of the following values:

    Value - Accuracy level

    - Medium

    - High

    - Very High

For more information about each accuracy level, see Accuracy levels of resizing recommendations for overallocated VMs.

Resize the instances as suggested in the recommended actions to achieve the estimated savings.
You can save an offline copy of the page as a PDF or an Excel file for reference. To do so, click  and select Export to PDF or Export to Excel.

Tip

When you export to Excel, the recommendation details for all the virtual machines on the page are exported in a separate column. You can use this offline copy to perform the suggested actions in the portal of the cloud provider.
