Analyzing costs by cloud service

Use the Cloud Services page to break down cloud costs by cloud services to get a quick summary and to perform a detailed analysis of your costs by cloud service. The Cloud Services page displays the monthly costs per cloud service of your public cloud platforms, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Azure, and Google Cloud Platform, and of your on-premises infrastructure.

The cloud services are logically grouped under categories such as Compute, Networking, Storage, Database. You can drill down into a cloud service to view details of the associated cost.

From the Cloud Services page, you can achieve the following goals:

  • Identify and analyze the cloud services that need to be optimized.
  • Analyze and investigate the cost of a cloud service.
  • View and compare the monthly cloud costs by cloud service category and cloud service.
  • View and compare the monthly costs of all resources that a cloud service uses.
  • View detailed bill (bill line items) for every cloud service.

Category:

A logical group of cloud services that from different cloud providers. For example, Compute that includes Amazon Web Services (AWS) EC2, Microsoft Azure Virtual Machine Scale Set, and Physical Virtual Machines in your on-premises data center (private cloud).

Resource:

An entity or a service of a cloud provider or in the on-premises data center that users can work with. For example, physical servers, virtual machines, storage devices, containers.

To analyze costs by cloud service

  1. In the navigation pane of the TrueSight console , select Cloud Cost Control and then, click the Cloud Services tab.
The Cloud Services page is displayed.
The cost details are displayed as color-coded charts. By default, the charts display data for the current month and for all available cloud providers.

  2. View a quick cost summary of all the cloud services

    1. To compare the total monthly cost of the top resource-consuming cloud service categories, review the Monthly Cost by Category pie chart:

Key characteristics of the chart are as follows:

      • The cost for a cloud service category is an aggregated value based on the cloud services that belong to that category.
      • Each slice of the pie chart has a unique color and is associated with a specific cloud service category.
      • On hovering your mouse over a slice of the chart, you can view details of the specific cloud service category such as cost (in percentage and currency) of the total cost.
      • On clicking a cloud service category name in the legend, you can choose to remove the cost details for that category.

    2. To compare the total monthly cost of the top resource-consuming cloud service categories, review the Monthly Cost by Category chart:

Key characteristics of the chart are as follows:

      • The chart displays a bar for each cloud service category. Each bar is divided into color-coded sections for each cloud vendor.
      • The cost for a cloud service category is an aggregated value based on the cloud services that belong to that category.
      • On hovering your mouse over a section of a bar, you can view details of the specific cloud service category such as cost (in percentage and currency) of the total cost.
      • On clicking a cloud provider name in the legend, you can choose to remove the cost details for that provider.

    3. To compare the monthly cost of all the cloud services, see the details under the Monthly Cost by Cloud Service table:

Key characteristics of the table are as follows:

      • The table includes the associated cloud service category, cloud provider, and total cost for every cloud service.
      • Along with the cost value, the Total Cost column displays a colored bar that graphically depicts the cost.
      • By using the cost bars for all cloud services, you can easily compare the cost per cloud service.
      • On clicking a cloud service name, you can view the cost breakup and details of that cloud service in the Cloud Service Details page.

  3. To view cost for a specific provider only or for a specific month, use the global filters or chart-specific filters:

    Global filters:

    1. Cloud Provider quick filter: Click a cloud provider button to show or hide the provider's data on the page.

    2. Monthly filter: Click the monthly filter to select a specific month for which you want to view the data.

infoInfo: By default, the page displays data for the current month and for all available cloud providers. The options that you select in the global filters (Cloud Provider quick filter, Monthly filter) apply to all the page elements (table and charts).

Chart filter: Click the provider name in the legend of a chart to hide or display its cost data.

  4. Drill down into a cloud service for details

    1. In the Monthly Cost by Cloud Service table, click the cloud service name for the service that you want to investigate and view details for.

The Cloud Service Details page opens that shows the following cost details for the selected cloud service:

Projected CostAverage monthly cost of the cloud service. The average cost calculation considers the computed and projected cost, depending on the current date of the month.
Projected Yearly CostForecasted yearly cost for the cloud service. The year is based on the selected month. For example, if you select Current month, then the selected year is the current year.
Number of InstancesNumber of active or running instances of resources that are assigned to the cloud service.
      Normalized Compute Hours

Approximate number of hours of compute time used by the instances that are assigned to the cloud service.

This metric is displayed only for compute-related services.

For more information about normalized compute hours, see Normalized compute hours overview.

Monthly CostsA chart that displays the cost breakup for the selected cloud service for the past 11 months and future 6 months, based on the selected month.

      Info

The cost details are based on the selected month. If you change the month and year, the cost data changes accordingly.

    2. To know details of the resources that are assigned to the selected cloud service and to identify the ones with higher costs, click the Resources tab. The Monthly Cost by Resource table displays details for the resources.

    3. Review the following column values in the Resources page:

      ColumnDescription
ResourceName of the resource. To drill down into detailed cost analysis of a resource, click the name. The Resource details page opens that provides a quick cost summary and bill line-item details for the resource.
