Configuring monitoring

Monitoring can be used to provide notification and additional responses to events. In this context, information (statistics), events and events notification/response are monitoring instances for example.

In TrueSight Middleware Administrator, you configure monitoring in various Administration Console locations. Most monitoring-related settings are available through the Settings object, one of the Navigation Panel options.

Note that the Settings object is not supported in TrueSight Middleware Administrator (Monitor Edition).

See a summary of the functionality differences between the full version of TrueSight Middleware Administrator and TrueSight Middleware Administrator (Monitor Edition).

Certain functions are presented in context within Properties Editors. For instance, email notification and script execution are two options set when defining rule types for active events. You configure these while setting rule type definitions for projects within a selected project's Properties Editor.

The Settings object

Three top-level server settings options are associated with the Settings object (accessed by clicking Settings in the Navigation Panel):

  •  Archiving settings
  •  Monitoring settings
  •  SMTP settings

Archiving settings

The Archive Settings determine how TrueSight Middleware Administrator handles the archiving of Queue Manager data. The application periodically creates automatic backups of Queue Manager configurations.

The settings used in this section determine how this archiving is executed.

  • Archive notification e-mail configures a recipient for notifications of archiving failures.
  • Archive File Max Count sets the maximum number of archive files stored.
  • Archive Interval sets the interval between automatic backup creation.

To set archive settings:

  1. From the Navigation Panel, click Settings.
  2. In the displayed BMM Admin Server Settings dialog, define the following:
    • Archive Notification E-mail: Enter the notification email for failures.
    • Archive File Max Count: enter the number of files to be archived per batch.
    • Archive Interval: set a number of minutes between archive creation.
  3. Click the Save icon to save the settings.

Note

It is not recommended to save manual export files or any other files to the automatic archiving directory.

Monitoring settings

Monitoring settings set monitoring intervals for connections and related objects associated with TrueSight Middleware Administrator projects.

There are two settings:

  • Setting a monitor(ing) interval, in seconds.
  • Setting a target email for notification purposes when a task fails.

The first setting, Monitor Interval, sets the frequency of object monitoring. There is a default polling interval of 300 seconds. The interval sets how often:

  • Data is collected from servers, queues, channels, etc.
  • Event rule conditions are evaluated with fresh data.
  • If necessary, event actions are executed.

Factors in setting Monitor Interval

Setting an interval for collecting information from a connection is a matter of user preference. If the connections are performing normally, there is no reason to change current settings. If problems are reported from multiple connections, you can increase the frequency as needed.

At the same time, intensive or hyper-monitoring may stress the system simply by increasing network/data traffic. Please keep this in mind when reducing the interval (which of course increases the rate of monitoring).

The number of configured connections, the limitations of the hardware involved, and network speed are all factors to consider when determining the best monitoring interval for your environment.

To set monitor settings:

  1. From the Navigation Panel, click Settings.
  2. In the Monitor Interval text box, type in the number of seconds between checks.
  3. In the Monitor Notification E-mail text box type in the target email address. This sets an email address if you want notification of a failed task sent to any individual.
  4. Click the Save icon to save the settings.

SMTP settings

SMTP settings define the source email parameters for the sender of monitoring results notification to any mail recipients designated in the Monitoring and Archive Settings categories.

To define SMTP settings:

  1. From the Navigation Panel, click Settings.
  2. Define the following:
    • Origin E-mail: The address from which any outgoing mail originates.
    • SMTP Port: This port number may be changed under certain circumstances (by default it is set to 25).
    • SMTP Host: This is Mailhost.xxx.com, where Mailhost is a place holder for the SMTP server name and 'xxx' is your company name string or another appropriate entry.
  3. Click the Save icon to save the settings.
