AUTOHMSG function—Automate on DFSMShsm log messages

The AUTOHMSG function, in conjunction with the MainView SRM Reporting component, provides automation capabilities for text messages that are written to the DFSMShsm log file.

These messages appear in the DFSMShsm job log and DFSMShsm activity files and are documented in the DFSMShsm Diagnostics manual. DFSMShsm messages are viewed in the HSMMSG view.

MainView SRM Reporting intercepts DFSMShsm text messages as they are being written to the DFSMShsm log data sets. As each message is intercepted, it is passed to the SVOS address space and processed against the AUTOHMSG function filter and rule list statements. DFSMShsm processing is not impeded by the Automation function.

AUTOHMSG filter and rule list statements can be used to issue events or include elements of the message text into skeleton JCL. Messages can be selected for processing according to message number, return code, reason code, data set age, and other metrics.

Note

The JOB_GROUP parameter will group AUTOHMSG records only if the ACT_ACCUM parameter is used.

AUTOHMSG creates automated responses to DFSMShsm messages. Although responses can be created for any DFSMShsm message, the most likely usage would be to respond to DFSMShsm error messages that occur during a user request or a DFSMShsm automatic process. Responses can include:

  • Submitting a job that can handle the error

  • Sending a message to a TSO user ID about the error

Note

You can establish responses to messages that are issued during DFSMShsm space management and CDS backup functions; however, MainView SRM Automation provides a facility specifically to provide automation for CDS backup and space management processing.
