Managing CMDB classes

BMC Remedyforce CMDB contains a set of out-of-the-box classes that store data about the most common Configuration Items (CIs) and assets. Each out-of-the-box class contains a set of out-of-the-box attributes, and each attribute corresponds to a field in the Base Element object. For more information about the out-of-the-box classes, including unique attributes, see BMC Remedyforce CMDB Common Data Model. Depending on the data that you want to store, you can customize the attributes of the out-of-the-box classes, and add new custom classes with custom attributes. In BMC Remedyforce CMDB 2.0, you can manage classes from the BMC Remedyforce CMDB UI. However, in BMC Remedyforce CMDB 1.0, the functionality to manage classes from the BMC Remedyforce CMDB UI is not supported.

Before you begin

To be able to add and update the attributes of classes, you must set up a remote site setting once to enable access to the Base Element object. If a remote site setting is not configured, you must manually navigate to the Base Element object once to add or update the class attributes. The following section contains information about verifying whether a remote site setting is already configured or not, and, if no such setting exists, how to create one.

To verify the remote site setting configuration

  1. Click the Remedyforce Administration tab.
  2. On the Home page, click the Manage Objects tile, and from the menu select Create and Edit Objects.

To create the remote site setting configuration

  1. From the Create and Edit Objects tab, perform the following actions:
    1. Copy the value provided for Remote Site URL.
    2. Click Salesforce Remote Site Settings.
  2. On the All Remote Sites page, click New Remote Site.
  3. In the Remote Site Name field, enter a name for the remote site.
  4. In the Remote Site URL field, paste the URL that you copied.
  5. Click Save.

To reopen and close the Create and Edit Objects tab

  1. Click on the Remedyforce Administration tab.
  2. On the Home page, click the Manage Objects tile, and from the menu, select Create and Edit Objects
  3. Close the Create and Edit Objects tab.

Managing classes

You can manage classes from the CMDB Classes list view page. The type of classes that you can manage depends on the CI and IT asset management configurations on the General CMDB Settings page. For more information, see Configuring general BMC Remedyforce CMDB 2.0 settings.

Important

In Remedyforce CMDB 2.0, BMC Software supports adding or updating a CMDB class and its attributes only from the CMDB Class form. Adding or updating data in the CMDB_Class object either manually, or from any external data source may corrupt the BMC Remedyforce CMDB, and is not supported. To access the CMDB Classes list view page

  1. Click the Remedyforce Administration tab.
  2. On the Home page, click on the Configure CMDB 2.0 tile, and from the menu select Classes.

The columns displayed on the CMDB Classes list view page are not configurable. The following columns are displayed:

  • Class – Displays the class name and is a link to the corresponding CMDB Class page. If you have entered a display label for a class, that display label, instead of the actual class name, is displayed.
  • Superclass – The superclass of the class. For BMC_BaseElement, superclass is not displayed as it is the highest-level superclass in the class hierarchy.
  • CMDB Class Type (CI Class) – This column is displayed only when both IT asset management and CI management are enabled in the General CMDB Settings page. For Rule Based Asset classes, it displays Asset (CI class name), where CI class name is the CI class based on which the Rule Based Asset class has been created. For a Rule Based Asset class, when you move the mouse over the  icon, a tooltip appears and displays the CI class name based on which the Rule Based Asset class has been created, and the rules applied on the CI class.
  • Display in CMDB – If the value is Yes, the corresponding class is visible on the Remedyforce CMDB tab. If the value is No, the corresponding class is hidden in the Tile, List, and Tree views of the Remedyforce CMDB tab.
  • Abstract – If the value is Yes, the corresponding class is an abstract class; If the value is No, the corresponding class is a CMDB instance class.
    Abstract classes organize subclasses and enable you to add a layer of organization. They contain only attributes, and do not contain any CIs or assets.
  • Custom – If the value is Yes, the corresponding class is a custom class; if the value is No, the corresponding class is an out-of-the-box class.

Note

If the system administrator has enabled both CI and IT asset management, the Filter by drop-down list is displayed on the toolbar of the CMDB Classes list view page. By default, CI Classes is selected and the list view displays the CI classes and classes which are both CIs and assets. You can select Asset Classes to display the asset classes and classes which are both CIs and assets, and All Classes to display CI and asset classes, and classes which are both CIs and assets in the list view. If only CI or IT asset management is enabled, the Filter by drop-down list is not displayed.

To manage the classes

Based on the CI and IT asset management configurations on the General CMDB Settings page, you can manage the following class types from the CMDB Classes list view page:

CI classes

A CI class stores data about CIs. For example, BMC_ComputerSystem stores data about computer systems.

CI management must be enabled.
Asset classes

An asset class stores data about assets. For example, BMC_Phone stores data about mobile phones. 

For more information about the out-of-the-box asset classes, see BMC Remedyforce CMDB Common Data Model. For more information about managing asset classes, see Managing asset classes.

IT asset management must be enabled.
Rule Based Asset classes

A Rule Based Asset class enables a CI instance to be also classified as an asset that inherits the attributes of the CI class that it is based on.
For example, BMC_Desktop stores information about desktop computers. This class is an out-of-the-box Rule Based Asset class mapped to the CI class BMC_ComputerSystem where the Primary Capability field contains Desktop. This means that any CIs created with these values are automatically categorized as an asset with the BMC_Desktop asset class. Conversely, this also means that any records assigned to the BMC_Desktop asset class are also automatically assigned as CIs with the BMC_ComputerSystem CI class, where the Primary Capability field is Desktop.

Note – By default, the out-of-the-box Rule Based Asset classes are activated in a new installation, and deactivated in an upgrade. After upgrading, when you enable IT asset management, you can choose to activate all out-of-the-box Rule Based Asset classes and synchronize existing CIs in BMC Remedyforce CMDB. IT asset management must be enabled.
CI and Asset

A CI and Asset class stores data about both CIs and assets. For example, BMC_Mainframe stores information about mainframe computer systems, which can be categorized both as CIs and assets. For more information about the available out-of-the-box CI and Asset classes, see BMC Remedyforce CMDB Common Data Model.
