Configuring CMDB 1.0

A configuration item (CI) is any component in your IT infrastructure that you need to deliver services to your clients. You must create CIs in BMC Remedyforce CMDB. You can attach supporting information about CIs in the form of documents or URLs. You can also establish a relationship among CIs. For example, you can establish a relationship among a monitor, keyboard, processor, and other items that make a computer.

The data model of BMC Remedyforce unifies the representation of configuration data. It is designed to store data about the most common CIs, such as hardware, software, and services and provide a mechanism for linking the CIs to provide a complete view of all elements of an IT environment and how CIs affect each other.

Note

This section provides information about configuring CMDB 1.0.

Starting from BMC Remedyforce version 20.14.01, an enhanced version of CMDB, referred to as CMDB 2.0, is available out-of-the-box for new installations. If you have upgraded from BMC Remedyforce 20.13.02 or earlier to version 20.14.01 or later, you must manually upgrade to CMDB 2.0.

BMC recommends that you upgrade to CMDB 2.0 because CMDB 1.0 does not support many features, such as asset management, model and location management, and data normalization. For more information about CMDB 2.0, see Configuring BMC Remedyforce CMDB 2.0.
