Collecting metric data from TrueSight Operations Management

TrueSight Operations Management uses monitor types to collect metric data from various sources. Add a component and apply filters to get these metrics into TrueSight Intelligence for analysis.

Watch the following video (03:27) on how to configure the TrueSight Intelligence Metric Adapter:

To enable the integration

Perform the following steps to enable the integration:

Step #DetailsReference
1

Download the TrueSight Intelligence Metric Adapter installation package from EPD.

The package comprises the following zip files:

  • TrueSight Intelligence Metric Adapter
    (TSIDataAdapter folder)

2

Install the hotfix on the TrueSight Infrastructure Management server.

Note: This step is not required if you have installed 10.7 Fix Pack 1.

Refer to the readme file in the hotfix zip file.
3

Install the TrueSight Intelligence Metric Adapter on the Presentation Server, or on a remote computer.

  1. Extract the TrueSight Intelligence Metric Adapter zip file to a folder. On Linux, ensure that the folder name does not contain spaces. For example, TDA.
  2. Ensure that the environment variable JAVA_HOME is set to the JRE folder.
For example, JAVA_HOME is set to C:\JRE
  3. Set the TrueSight Intelligence Metric Adapter environment variable TDA_HOME to the folder that contains the extracted files.
For example, TDA_HOME is set to C:\TDA
  4. Use one of the following options to register the TrueSight Intelligence Metric Adapter as a service:
    • (Windows)
      1. Open a command prompt and from the TDA\bin folder, and run the following command:
        tda service register
The command creates and starts the Windows service BMC TrueSight Intelligence Metric Adapter automatically after it is successfully registered.
    • (Linux)
      1. As a root user, from the TDA/bin folder, type the following command:
        ./tda service register
The command creates the service BMCTDASvc in /etc/init.d
      2. Start the TrueSight Intelligence Metric Adapter by running the following command:
        ./tda server start
4Install the TrueSight Intelligence Metric Adapter plugin on the Presentation Server.
  1. Copy the TrueSight Intelligence Metric Adapter plugin zip file to the Presentation Server.
  2. From the installationDirectory\truesightpserver\bin folder, run the following command:
tssh componenttype add <plugin zip file path>
5

Add the TrueSight Intelligence Metric Adapter as a component in the Presentation Server.

To customize the TrueSight Intelligence Metric Adapter

The tda.conf file located in the installedDirectory\conf folder lets you customize the TrueSight Intelligence Metric Adapter. The following table lists a couple of properties:

PropertyValue

tda.server.protocol

The protocol (http or https) for communication between the Presentation Server and the TrueSight Intelligence Metric Adapter.

tda.server.port

The port for communicating with the TrueSight Intelligence Metric Adapter.

To add the TrueSight Intelligence metric adapter in TrueSight Presentation Server

  1. Ensure that you have installed the TrueSight Intelligence Metric Adapter. See Integrating with TrueSight Intelligence for metric data

  2. In the TrueSight console, go to Administration > Components, select the action menu next to Components, and select Add Component.

  3. For the component type, select TrueSight Intelligence Metric Adapter.
  4. Enter a valid Host Name or IP Address of the host where the TrueSight Intelligence Metric Adapter is installed.

  5. Select the protocol HTTP or HTTPS.
  6. Enter the Port number that you configured for the TrueSight Intelligence Metric Adapter.

  7. Select the tenant to which you want to associate the TrueSight Intelligence Metric Adapter.

  8. Under Custom Settings, enter the following details:

    1. TrueSight Intelligence Server Host Name - The host name of the TrueSight Intelligence server.
    2. TrueSight Intelligence Registered Email ID - The email address used to register an account on TrueSight Intelligence.

    3. TrueSight Intelligence API Token - The authentication token for the TrueSight Intelligence account where the data will be sent.

      Tip

      To get the API token

Your organization's account has a unique API token that must be used for authentication while sending data to TrueSight Intelligence.

The TrueSight Intelligence API key for your account is available in the  TrueSight Account Manager . Navigate to My Account > Product Security.

    4. Poll Interval (Seconds) - The data collection frequency (120-3600 seconds) from TrueSight Infrastructure Management.

  9. Click Save.

Known limitations

The following limitations exist when you integrate with TrueSight Intelligence for metric data:

LimitationImpact
Special characters

TrueSight Intelligence allows the following special characters in the source field: _ . - / @ %

Any data that contains other special characters is dropped.

Instance and application mappingIn TrueSight Intelligence, a source can be associated with only one application at any point. A source may not always be associated with the same application.
Source length limitation

TrueSight Intelligence has a 100-character limitation on the source length. A full-path representation of an instance that is more than 100 characters cannot be represented in TrueSight Intelligence.

Workaround:

To disable the full-path representation, add the following entry in the <installation directory>\pw\custom\conf\pronto.conf file of the Infrastructure Management server:

tda.sourcename.showfullpath=false

To create a TrueSight Intelligence Metric Filter

Perform the following steps to create a TrueSight Intelligence Metric Filter:

  1. Log in to the TrueSight console and navigate to the Configuration > TrueSight Intelligence Metric Filter page.
  2. Click Create Filter.
  3. On the Add Filter page, provide the required information.

NameCreates a filter with this name.
TrueSight Intelligence App IDSend metric data to the TrueSight Intelligence App that uses this App ID. If the App ID does not exist, a new App is created.
Filter ByFilter by services, applications, or devices.
After you make a selection, the available monitor types and attributes are displayed.
Show Non-KPIsDisplays metrics that are not set as KPIs. By default, TrueSight Intelligence only displays metrics that are set as KPIs under the App.
  4. Click Add to add the selected filter criteria. Repeat the preceding steps to add multiple filter criteria.
  5. After you have added all required filter criteria, save the filter.

Example use case

As an administrator, you want to view the memory performance data for a Windows server in a particular application App1.

Create a TrueSight Intelligence metric filter in the TrueSight console

  1. From the TrueSight console, navigate to the Configuration > TrueSight Intelligence Metric Filter page.
  2. Create a new filter Data_filter_App1 with the same TrueSight Intelligence App ID.
The filter name and App ID do not have to be the same.
  3. In the Filter By section, select Applications and then App1 from the list of applications.
  4. In the Monitor Type section, select Windows Memory Performance and under Attributes, select Available Bytes and Memory Used.
  5. Click Add to add the filter criteria and then save the filter.

Note

Data is displayed in TrueSight Intelligence after the next poll interval configured while adding the TrueSight Intelligence Metric Adapter component.

View the metric data in TrueSight Intelligence

  1. Access the TrueSight Intelligence console.
  2. A new App Data_filter_App1 is created and accessible from the Apps tab.
