Video introduction

The following video (4:02) provides a brief introduction of the product.

Product goals

BMC Helix Capacity Optimization provides the following key capabilities:

Gain visibility into resource capacity, utilization and utilization trends. Use the infrastructure data that is collected to understand the usage and performance of your infrastructure elements, determine whether the infrastructure elements are used optimally and efficiently or are at risk, and plan for future capacity needs.

Feature Details Resources
Capacity insight
  • Use out-of-the-box capacity views to gain visibility into your infrastructure resources.
  • View the usage and availability of all infrastructure resources - on-premises and public cloud.
  • Define customized views as per your requirements.
Using views to analyze infrastructure and virtual data
  • Use out-of-the-box reports to keep the stakeholders informed about the capacity.
  • Generate on-demand, scheduled, and by-exception reports in different formats, such as HTML, PDF, RTF, XLS and PPT.
  • Automatically publish or send the reports through emails.
  • Gain cost visibility through Chargeback reports.
Creating reports and report templates
Performance troubleshooting
  • Use Investigate studies to view capacity and performance data of systems in near real-time.
  • Perform adhoc troubleshooting and root-cause analysis for problems on a specific system.
Investigating capacity and performance issues in systems

Capacity insight - Capacity views

Identify and avoid risks such as immediate resource saturation or upcoming resource saturation (for example, in the next 30 days).

Feature Details Resources
Risk identification and management

Review and analyze the out-of-the-box recommendations to detect and resolve capacity risk issues.

Using recommendations to resolve capacity risk and efficiency issues

Risk identification and management - Idle VM recommendation details

Identify issues that affect the efficiency and resolve them. For example, idle VMs, overallocated VMs.

Feature Details Resources
Resource rightsizing

Review and analyze the out-of-the-box recommendations for rightsizing overallocated resources based on usage patterns.

Using recommendations to resolve capacity risk and efficiency issues

Unused resource management

Review and analyze the out-of-the-box recommendations for managing the unused resources (for example, idle VMs).

Automated VM placement recommendations Create virtualization studies to determine the best use of resource capacity with automated placement recommendations for new or increased VMs. Creating virtualization studies to assess VM capacity requirements

Resource rightsizing - Overallocated VM recommendations details

Predict the infrastructure needs, estimate whether the existing infrastructure is adequate to meet the current and future demands, and accordingly plan for the new infrastructure.

Feature Details Resources
Forecasting and modeling

Perform "what-if" analysis to predict the resource needs of systems and business drivers.

Modeling capacity usage
Capacity reservations
  • Reserve resources for upcoming application releases.
  • Schedule the release of resources as applications are decommissioned.
Reserving capacity for upcoming services

Key concepts

The Business Services view is a feature that provides a consolidated summary of all business services in your infrastructure. You can drill down into specific business services and view the associated applications and service pools details, and analyze the capacity at the service pool level. For details, see Business services, applications, and service pools.

Capacity Pools are logical groupings of homogeneous resources of infrastructure capacity. They aggregate the capacity data coming from different entities available in the IT infrastructure; for example, by business importance, customer, owner, geography, etc. For details, see Capacity pools.
