Recommendations page in the vSphere Virtual Machines view

The Recommendations page in the vSphere Virtual Machines view displays a set of recommended actions that can help you resolve capacity related problems in your vSphere environment.

To access the page, in the Views tab navigation pane, click Views > Virtualization > vSphere > Virtual Machines and in the vSphere Virtual Machines page, click the Recommendations tab.

Based on the type of problem in the infrastructure, a recommendation type is defined. For more information about all the recommendation types, and the configurable parameters and thresholds that are used to generate them, see Using recommendations to resolve capacity risk and efficiency issues.

Recommendations summary for all vSphere systems

The Recommendations table displays detailed recommendation information for all the vSphere systems. The following table describes each column in detail.

ColumnDescription
Severity or Efficiency iconIndicates the severity of the issue in the system type. Click the icon to view the recommendation details.
Name
Name of the system. Click the name link to open the details page.
System TypeSystem type, for example, Virtual Host - VMware, Virtual Cluster - VMware.
TypeDenotes the type of problem. For example, Forecasted Saturation; Idle VM.
Description

Brief description of the problem type.

For example:

  • This virtual machine has been detected to be idle for more than 45 days.
  • This cluster has 5 Idle VMs.

Recommended actions

Suggested actions to solve the problem.

For example:

  • To reduce costs, delete virtual machine <name>.
  • Remove old snapshots to reclaim storage.

You can click the link in the recommended actions to open a page in the Helix Capacity Optimization Console that contains the related details.

Note

Because of the browser security policy, the Helix Capacity Optimization Console opens only when both the consoles, Views tab and Helix Capacity Optimization Console, are running on the same protocol, which can be either http or https.

Filtering options

Use the sorting and filtering options on the page to find a specific system. For more information, see Sorting a table in Views and Using filtering options in Views.

Additionally, you can use the following filtering options on this page.

 Filtering Option Description
Severity quick filter

Enables you to quickly filter out systems to display details for systems based on their severity of risk and efficiency. A filter button for each of the following severity levels is available:

  • Critical Risk
  • Warning Risk
  • High Efficiency
  • Medium Efficiency
  • Low Efficiency

For example, if you apply Critical Risk filter, only systems at critical risk are displayed and you can review recommendation details for them.

System type

Use this filter to select a specific system type.

Recommendations details

To view the recommendation details, for a VM, click the corresponding Efficiency icon (for example: ).
The Recommendations window displays the exact findings along with the recommended actions that you can take to manage the VM.

The following table explains the different fields that you see in the Recommendations window.

FieldDescription
SystemName of the virtual machine.
Optimizer findingsBrief description of the issue.
TypeRecommendation type. It is one of the configuration parameters in the optimizer rule that generates this recommendation.
Severity/EfficiencyEfficiency level of the recommendation that is based on the estimated savings per month that you can achieve by implementing the recommended action.
Generated onDate of the last run of the associated optimizer rule.
Optimizer ruleName of the associated optimizer rule.
Recommended actionsSuggested actions that you can implement to optimize your costs.
Accuracy indicator

(Displayed only for overallocated VM) Indicator of the level of accuracy or reliability of the resizing recommendation. For more information about how the recommendation is generated, see Overallocated VM recommendation.

Click the icon to view its description.

The icon has one of the following values:

Value - Accuracy level

- Medium

- High

- Very High

For more information about each accuracy level, see Troubleshooting resizing recommendations for overallocated VMs.
