Creating a time forecasting model

Use a time forecasting model to predict the future behavior of one or more performance metrics by observing their past behavior captured over time, by observing their time series.

This topic describes how to create a time forecasting model, which is part of Working with time forecasting models.

You can create other types of models using the same Wizard. Some of the steps may change depending on the model type, but the sequence remains the same.

The following video (2:27) illustrates the steps to create a time forecasting model to display resources that are likely to saturate in a given time.

To create a time forecasting model

  1. In Workspace, click All Domains> domainName  > Works folder.
  2. Click Add and select Add model. The model creation wizard is displayed. 
  3. On the Model type page, select Forecast trends of system or business driver metrics (TIME FORECASTING MODEL) and click Next.

  4. On the Scope page, specify the components you want to include in the model, and click Next:

    1. Type: Select whether you want to include Systems or Business Drivers in the model
    2. Selection mode: To specify the entities to include in the model, select one of the following:
      • Entity Filter: From the Scope list, select a predefined entity filter for the model. For more information, see Filters
      • Select list: Select one or more systems or business drivers from Source and click  to add them under Selection. You can also drag and drop systems and business drivers from Source to Selection , or double-click to move them from Source to Selection.

  5. On the Template page, specify one of the following options for template to use in the model, and click Next:
    • Predefined model template: If model templates exist for the selected entities for the model, select the Template group and the Template from the lists. The description of the selected template is displayed in the Template description box. For example, the Virtualization template group includes templates that are specific only to VMware virtualization. If your virtualization environment is VMware, you can select either the VMWare Virtualization or the Virtualization template group.

      When you select a template for the model, the template defines the metrics, series, and thresholds, and the pages to select them are not displayed.

      If no model templates are available for the current entities selection, the wizard informs you and the Custom model option is selected by default.

    • Custom model: Select this option if you do not want to use a template to create this time forecasting model. 

  6. (Applicable for the custom model only) On the Metrics page, select the metrics to include in the model, and click Next.

    Important

    Custom metrics defined without any measurement units are not displayed in this Metrics list. For details on creating a custom metric, see Viewing datasets and metrics by dataset and ETL module.

  7. (Applicable for the custom model only) On the Thresholds page, specify one of the following threshold options to apply to the selected metrics, and click Next:
    • No threshold: Thresholds are not applied.
    • Use Optimizer thresholds: The predefined Optimizer thresholds are applied.
    • Manual thresholds: Values are selected in the scenario.
    • Manual thresholds given by other metrics: For each resource included in the model, select the metric from which to copy the threshold.
      When you select this option, the Metrics list becomes available, select the metrics from this list from which to copy the threshold.
  8. On the Name page, enter a name and description for the model, and click Next.
    A default name based on the selected metrics, is displayed. You can change it as required. You can also click  to select the parameters you want to include in the model name.

  9. On the Summary page, click Finish.
    The time forecasting model detail page is displayed, listing the systems to be consolidated and the available scenarios.
