Partitions page in the AIX PowerVM view

The Partitions page in the AIX PowerVM view provides an overview of the available partitions in the PowerVM virtualization environment, including details about online processors, CPU and memory utilization, memory configured, and more.

To access the page, select Views > Virtualization > AIX Views > PowerVM, and click the Partitions tab.

PowerVM partitions

The PowerVM Partitions table lists all PowerVM partitions present in the selected frame. By default, some columns are hidden. You can show or hide columns using the action menuthat is located next to the Allocated Capacity table title. For more information, see Managing charts and tables in Views.

Metrics marked with (plus) are displayed only if Active Memory Expansion (AME) is enabled and turned on.

Each row corresponds to a PowerVM partition and shows the following information.

The number of CPU cores allocated to the partition. This metric is relevant for SPLPARs only.

CPU Entitlement Used [%]

Percentage of CPU used by the partition, normalized by the CPU entitlement assigned to the partition. This metric is relevant for SPLPARs only. If the SPLPAR is uncapped, the entitlement utilization can exceed 100%.

CPU Allocated [%]

Percentage of CPU cores allocated to the partition, normalized by the number of dedicated processors for DLPAR, and by the number of virtual processors for SPLPAR.

This metric is available if the partition has not been instrumented with partitions, and if HMC Statistics are available.

CPU Util [%]

Percentage of CPU used by the partition, normalized by the number of dedicated processors for DLPAR, and by the number of virtual processors for SPLPAR. This metric is available only if the partition has been instrumented with Agents.

When AME is enabled for an LPAR, the OS starts compressing and decompressing data in memory based on the memory access pattern of applications. This results in the creation of two pools of memory – compressed and uncompressed. This metric shows the amount of memory that is in the compressed pool.

This is the target memory expansion factor configured for the partition. It is available only when AME MODE is Yes.

When configuring the memory expansion factor for an LPAR, it is possible that the expansion factor chosen cannot be achieved either because the factor was too large or because the workloads running on the system are not compressible. This can result in a memory shortfall which is reported as a memory deficit.

PowerVM partition details

To view the details page for a particular partition, click the name of the partition in the Partitions column. The Partition details page displays the following information:

  • General details: General partition details, such as name, type, description, number of elements within it, and tags are displayed at the top of the page. 
  • Related Information panel: Displays links to detailed pages for Thresholds and Partition details.

  • Tags panel: Displays tags (if any) that are associated with the pool. For more information, see Filtering data displayed in Views.

  • Summary information: The Summary tab displays performance details for the selected pool in a horizontal summary table as well as charts.

    You can download charts, annotate them, print them, and so on. For more information, see Managing charts and tables in Views 

  • Configuration Details: The Configuration Details tab displays the configuration metrics for the pool.

  • File Systems: The File Systems tab displays information related to the file system for all partitions or the selected partition.
  • Donated CPU Busy/Idle and Active Virtual Processor charts

Available memory

Review the Memory Available chart on the Partition details page to view the amount of memory available for use by processesThis metric is available for AIX 7.1, AIX 6.1 (TL2 or higher) and AIX 5.3 (TL9 or higher) systems. AIX computes available memory by taking into account the amount of free memory and the minimum memory needed for the file system cache.

Donated CPU Busy/Idle

Review the Donated CPU/Busy/Idle chart on the Partition details page to understand whether the selected DLPAR is donating CPU cycles periodically.

If the DLPAR is always donating the same amount or never donating cycles, then a processor reconfiguration may be a better option than Shared-Dedicated mode.

This chart will be displayed if Shared-Dedicated mode is enabled for DLPARs. If the selected DLPAR donates cycles to the Pool, the chart will display the number of donated cycles.

Active virtual processors

The Partition details page described in the preceding section contains an Active Virtual Processors chart with an Hourly resolution. You can use this chart to understand how many virtual processors are active during peak load, and also to scale up or down the number of configured virtual processors.

Processor Folding causes the hypervisor to reduce the number of virtual processors based on the load on the system. This improves the efficiency of the system by reducing the overhead of running additional processors and also avoiding unnecessary context switches.

The File Systems tab has a summary table that displays the following information related to the file system for all partitions or the selected partition.
