Managing the capacity of your VMware vCloud Director

As a Capacity Planner or VMware vCloud Director Technology Specialist, you can use BMC Helix Continuous Optimization to configure, administer, and manage the capacity of your vCloud Director infrastructure. You can collect and manage data for a vCloud Director environment that contains resources such as virtual data centers.

As the flow diagram illustrates, the data source (VMware vCloud) collects data from the vCloud resources. The collected data is transferred to Continuous Optimization where it is processed, and then displayed on the user interface. You can use the product features to review, analyze, and manage the capacity of your vCloud resources.

What can you do with BMC Helix Continuous Optimization?

Managing the capacity of vCloud resources

You can analyze and manage the capacity of your vCloud resources by using the vCloud view. For the resources data to be available in the view, the Administrator must first set up the data source to collect data.

Task 1. Collect data and install the views

As an Administrator, configure and use the out-of-the-box VMware - vCloud Infrastructure extractor and VMware - vCloud Services extractor ETLs for data collection.

After data collection starts, data is loaded daily and Indicators are available in the Workspace tab.

As an Administrator, you must install the vCloud views and grant the necessary permissions to Capacity Planners and vCloud Specialists to access these views.

Task 2. Analyze the collected data

For detailed analysis of the usage and health of vCloud resources, use the vCloud view.

The following common use cases are described here:

Understand the usage and health of vCloud resources

Review and analyze the usage and health of vCloud resources in the vCloud page in the vCloud view.

Understand the availability and utilization of provider and organization vDCs

Review and analyze the resource metrics for provider and organization vDC pages in the vCloud view. For more information, see Provider vDCs page in the vCloud view and Organization vDCs page in the vCloud view.

Identify the vCloud resources that are exhausting

Review and analyze the resources for which the capacity is nearing saturation or already saturated. For more information, see the bottleneck resource and future saturated metrics in the Provider vDCs page in the vCloud view and Organization vDCs page in the vCloud view.
