Editing chart options for an analysis
The Chart Options tab enables you to modify the data displayed in an analysis and the appearance of charts in the analysis.
The following video (2:52) illustrates the steps for modifying chart type for an analysis.
Information
This video describes the functionality of TrueSight Capacity Optimization, but it is valid for BMC Helix Continuous Optimization too.
This topic provides steps to perform the following tasks
To edit chart options for an analysis
- Navigate to Workspace > Domains, Services & Applications > Domain > Works.
- Click on an analysis you want to modify chart options for. The analysis details page is displayed on the right.
- Click Edit. The Edit analysis page is displayed.
Expand the Chart Options tab and set the properties listed in the following table:
Note
- Options that are available only in the Advanced mode are marked with a .
- Some options are available based on the Type of analysis you select.
Chart Options tab
Property
Description
Type
Select how data will be displayed (lines, bars, pie, histogram, calendar chart.). For more information, see: Analysis chart types.
Number of buckets Type the number of buckets you want the chart to represent the number of entities (typically systems) in, based on their summary value. Title Set a title for the chart; you can use macro-variables. Subtitle Set a subtitle for the chart; you can use macro-variables. When a data point is missing
Select the action to be taken when data points are missing.
Chart Split Select whether to retain a single chart or split it based on the available options in the drop-down list. If you select Custom, you can further modify your settings and use regular expressions. Chart split - On parentship types (leave empty for all) Available only if you select A chart for each parent or A chart for each parent (group parent series with children) from the Chart Split list.
Select the parentship type based on which you want to split the chart. If you do not select a parentship type, all types are selected.
Chart split - On parentship visibility Available only if you select A chart for each parent or A chart for each parent (group parent series with children) from the Chart Split list.
Select whether you want the split chart to be visible in the tree, or not.
Chart split - Time period
Select how to split the a chart for the time period.
Chart split - Metric type
Select whether you want to split a chart based on the metric type.
- For a generic metric, the metric type is ValType.
- For a formula metric, the metric type is FormulaResultType.
X axis title
Set a title for the horizontal axis; you can use macro-variables.
Available when the Type is set to Last values - Bars.
Y axis title
Set a title for the vertical axis; you can use macro-variables.
Show legend
Select Yes to display the chart legend.
Legend Style Select the legend Size and Color. Max number of series for legend Type a value for the maximum number of series for the legend to use in the chart. Legend for series
Set how to label the series; an example is:
%ENTNAME% – %OBJNAME% -- %SUBOBJNAME% – %LOCATIONNAME% – %GOLEVS% %STATNAME%
To visualize a namespace in the chart, use
%NAMESPACE%
For example,
%ENTNAME% – %OBJNAME% -- %SUBOBJNAME% – %NAMESPACE% - %STATNAME%
Custom text below chart Type to create a custom legend and display it below the chart. For tabular formatting, use '||' for headers and '|' for content cells. The text in the header cells is displayed in bold. See the following example:
Sample custom text:
|| ZU| Zurich || GV | Geneva || BL | Basel |
|| LE| Lausanne|| BN | Bern || WR | Winterthur |
|| LN | Lucerne || St G| Saint. Gallen|| FR| Fribourg |
|| BN | Bien || TH | Thun || SN | Schaffhausen|
Resulting legend:Legend Position Set the position of the legend in the chart to Bottom or Right.
Tip
Position legend on the right to get better reports when the legend is long.
Number of columns for legend Set the number of columns to display in the legend. The legend is rendered in the selected number of columns, independent of the number of series to show.
Note
You cannot select the number of columns if you choose Legend Position as Right.
X axis labels rotation
Change the orientation of the label; the value can be a number between -90 and 90 (degrees).
X axis labels alignment Select if you want the labels to be center aligned or aligned to the tick. Maximum number of series (top-n) Set the maximum number of only the top-n series to display in the chart, that are sorted by average or mean value (depending on the metric type). Top-n series filtering method Select the filtering methods to be used for the chart:
- Based on summary value - fast: Estimates a summary point for each series and takes the highest points as top.
- Based on dayprofile: Estimates a summary point for each hour for each series (also called dayprofile) and considers the highest point for any series. This method is more accurate than the preceding method, if time series have recurring hourly peaks in the time period.
- Based on all analysis samples - slow and accurate: high memory requirements: Analyzes all the samples at the selected resolution. This method is slow and memory consuming, but also the most accurate. Using this method is not recommended, unless there is a very specific need.
Top-n direction Select the direction of the top-n series:
Greatest values: Plots the series in an ascending order.
Lowest values: Plots the series in a descending order.
Top-n behavior Select if the excluded series should be hidden or summed together as OTHER. X axis type Select if the X axis should display time or category.
Y axis title Type a title for the vertical axis; you can use macro-variables. Y axis scale Select if you want to use a Normal or Logarithmic scale for the Y axis. Y axis minimum
Select a minimum value for the Y axis from the following options:
- Automatic
- Lowest
- Value - Type a minimum value for the Y axis and click Apply.
Y axis maximum
Select a maximum value for the Y axis from the following options:
- Automatic
- Lowest
- Value - Type a maximum value for the Y axis and click Apply.
Right axis Select if you want to use the right axis. You can select metrics for the right axis or scale the right axis using a factor. If you select metrics for the right axis, you can display the metrics on it using the On axis option in the Editing metric styles for an analysis. Right axis scale factor Select the factor used to scale the right axis. This option is displayed if Right axis is set to Scaled. Right axis title Type a title for the right axis. This option is displayed if Right axis is set to Scaled. Right axis color Select a color to be used for the right axis. This option is displayed if Right axis is set to Scaled. Right axis scale Select if you want to use a Normal or Logarithmic scale for the right axis. Right axis minimum Set a minimum value for the right axis. Select from the following options:
- Automatic
- Lowest
- Value - Type a minimum value for the Right axis and click Apply.
Right axis maximum Set a maximum value for the right axis. Select from the following options:
- Automatic
- Lowest
- Value - Type a maximum value for the Right axis and click Apply.
Y/Right axis normalization Select if you want to normalize the Y axis between 0 and 1. This is applicable to both the left and right axes.
Automatic Y/Right axis scope Select if you want the Y axis scope to be set separately for each chart or if it should be the same for all charts. This scope is applicable to both the left and right axes.
Y/Right axis grid Select from the following options:

To use the right axis on an analysis chart
Analyses allow you to produce output graphs that display two Y axes, one on the left and one on the right side of the chart. This feature can be useful for viewing a scaled axis or viewing a chart for other metrics.
Right axis - Scaled
To read the chart for one or more time series using a proportionally re-sized metric scale.
Using the right axis to read data using a different scale
Right axis - Select metrics
To display two or more time series on the same graph and obtaining a significant plot even though they use different metric scales. For example, displaying customer requests (sum) and CPU utilization (percentage) on the same chart.
Using the right axis to plot different types of data
To edit an analysis chart
After you save the analysis, you can view the charts. Open individual charts and click Edit to edit various details described in the following table:
