Collection architecture in KVM environment


With PATROL KM for UNIX version 9.9.00, you can monitor KVMs (kernel-based virtual machine). KVM is a full virtualization solution for Red Hat Enterprise Linux on x86 and x86-64 hardware containing virtualization extensions (Intel VT or AMD-V).

Using KVM, you can run multiple virtual machines on which Linux or Windows operating system is installed. Each virtual machine has its private virtualized hardware such as network card, disk, and graphics adapter. Each virtual machine is implemented as regular Linux process, which is scheduled by the standard Linux scheduler.

PATROL KM for UNIX monitors the configuration statistics (such as virtual CPU and memory assigned to the virtual machine and other statistics such as CPU and disk utilization of the virtual machine.

PATROL KM for UNIX uses both the BMC PATROL Perform Collector (for most of the application classes) and XPC-based collection method (for the LVIRT application class) to monitor these statistics in the KVM environment. Following figure shows the data collection architecture in the KVM environment.

Note

The architecture in following figure is only applicable for the KVM host, not the KVM guest. Inside KVM guests, data collection by BMC PATROL Perform collector is not supported. Therefore, PSL data collection method is used to collect data.
